Hillary Clinton: Trump's blaming of 'zero tolerance' family-separation policy on Democrats is an 'outright lie'
  • Hillary Clinton spoke out Monday against President Donald Trump's zero-tolerance immigration policy.
  • Trump has blamed the policy on Democrats, which Clinton called "an outright lie."
  • Clinton also criticized Republican officials who have referenced religion to defend the policy, condemning "those who selectively use the Bible to justify this cruelty."
Former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton spoke out Monday against President Donald Trump's zero-tolerance immigration policy and its defenders.

The former first lady zeroed in on Trump's repeated false blaming of legislation passed by Democrats for the policy his administration is enforcing, which is not mandated by law.

"That is an outright lie," Clinton said during remarks at an event in New York. "It is incumbent on all of us, citizens and journalists, to call it just that."

The policy was announced as a deterrence measure in May by Attorney General Jeff Sessions. It has resulted in almost 2,000 children separated from their families at the border over six weeks, according to government data obtained by The Associated Press.

Clinton also took aim at the Republican officials who had referenced the Bible as a defense for the policy, saying "those who selectively use the Bible to justify this cruelty are ignoring a central tenet of Christianity."

Sessions responded to a Texan archbishop's criticism of the policy last week by citing a verse from the Book of Romans that says God ordained laws from the government "for the purpose of order."

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders later backed up Sessions' use of the verse, saying "it is very biblical to enforce the law." Clinton said this interpretation of the Bible didn't line up with her personal knowledge.

"I went to a lot of years of Sunday School. I even taught it from time to time," Clinton said. "I studied the Bible, the Old and New Testament, and what has been done using the name of religion is contrary to everything I was ever taught."

Clinton then cited a verse from the Book of Luke, in which "Jesus said suffer the little children unto me, he did not say let the children suffer."

"So the test of any nation is how we treat the most vulnerable among us," Clinton said.

Clinton also cited an op-ed in The Washington Post this weekend by fellow former first lady Laura Bush, whom Clinton called "absolutely right" when she wrote "this policy is cruel, it is immoral and it breaks my heart."

Clinton and Bush are among growing bipartisan outcry over the policy.

"So the test of any nation is how we treat the most vulnerable among us," Clinton said.
That's why she said she wouldn't fight for universal healthcare and tuition free college, called welfare recipients "deadbeats," and has supported the destruction of third world countries. Of course, she's always looked out for Wall Street and the military industrial complex. If that's not an advocate for the vulnerable, I don't know who is!

She also talks about the selective use of the Bible, which she used to support her conservative "marriage is between a man and a woman" view up until five years ago.

In a 2014 interview, Hillary said that immigrant children who crossed the border would be "sent back." At the same time, she said the increase in illegal immigration was due to violence in some Central American countries. Even more recently, the Democrats broke their promise to protect the Dreamers when it came time to sign a deal to fund the government.

Also, Vox put out an article in March that mentioned deportations under Obama vs. Trump:

"So in the 2000s, the US started deporting more immigrants than it ever had before. And for the first time, a large number of those deported were unauthorized immigrants with no criminal record, who were deported just because they were unauthorized. For the first time, in other words, simply being an immigrant without papers in the US carried a real risk of deportation.

The Trump administration has worked hard to downplay this history, but it’s worth remembering that it was under President Obama that the US reached its high-water mark for immigration enforcement. By pretty much any quantitative measure — arrests, deportations, the share of all deportees who had no criminal record — any year of Obama’s first term saw more aggressive immigration enforcement than Trump’s first year.

But because ICE was being run by a Democrat — one who had promised to legalize unauthorized immigrants — many progressives didn’t pay much attention at the time. And, more important, the policy was packaged very differently: The administration itself downplayed the aggressiveness of its tactics. It spent most of its time promising that ICE was going after “felons, not families” — though it wasn’t until November 2014, when a DHS memo set restrictive guidelines on when ICE could arrest unauthorized immigrants, that “felons, not families” became more or less a reality.

Objectively, the Trump immigration agenda — “unshackling” ICE agents and reiterating that every unauthorized immigrant “should be worried” about getting deported — is a reinstatement of the status quo during Obama’s first term. But because it’s a change from a period of relative safety — deportations did go down in the final years of the Obama administration — and because of Trump’s anti-immigrant rhetoric, it feels like something new." Some people clearly aren't paying attention if they think Hillary Clinton and the Democrats have the moral high ground. For a two party system, they're really just two peas in a pod.

And as for Laura Bush saying "this policy is cruel, it is immoral and it breaks my heart," has she forgotten her husband's policies? Mass deportations began under Bush as he sought to strip Americans of their civil liberties and illegally went to war with Iraq. Did that "break her heart" too? It's funny how they brush aside their cruelty when attacking Trump for his.

Normalizing monsters is something many Americans love to do, and in bipartisan fashion too. Of course, each side thinks their monster is a good person.

I, for one, have been critical of Slippery Hillary despite voting for her three times. But others have said they almost wanted Trump to win in 2016 as vengeance for what she and the DNC did to Bernie --- and, as a result, her unfair tactics and crimes are still all they want to talk about..... just like Trump does.

For some Republicans, and certain progressives, Hillary is still the enemy.

Meanwhile Trump is loving this because while talk about the ancient history of failed Democratic Party candidates and past elections, they are not talking about him ripping children out of the arms of their mothers and throwing them into cages.

This disgraceful treatment of the children of migrants is the real scandal happening right now, affecting the lives of real people.

This has sinister shades of Nazi Germany.

Yes, I believe you and Angela Channing have an objective view of Hillary. But at the same time, my criticisms of Trump seem to fall on deaf ears because I also criticize Hillary.

There have also been times when I've created threads and made posts exclusively about Trump, only to receive facetious replies about Hillary.

The point I've been making is that Trump and Hillary are the enemy. Hillary wants to lecture us on caring about the most vulnerable. She talks about a selective interpretation of the Bible. She says Trump's immigration policy is cruel. Of course, she's right on all points. But what she leaves out is that her policies also hurt the most vulnerable. She selectively used the Bible to support being against gay marriage. She had a policy of sending back immigrant children, even after she admitted that many of them were fleeing violence.

It's not just Hillary. I also called out Laura Bush. Her husband's immigration policies were cruel as well, yet she's "heart broken" over Trump's separation of families. It's not a defense of Trump to call out hypocrites who criticize him for things they either supported or their spouses did. If they're going to attack Trump, shouldn't they have been on the right side?

I've also addressed the comment about almost preferring Trump winning many times. It was a visceral reaction to a party working against the progressive candidate and then bashing his supporters for being upset about it. I also thought it would help the Democratic Party wake up and realize the days of supporting corporatism and militarism were over.

Of course, I obviously underestimated their desire to screw their base. If anything, they doubled down on those tactics while choosing to interfere in Congressional primaries. Combine that with their pied piper strategy, and it's clear they share some of the responsibility for Trump. I also don't attack Trump from the right like many liberals do. I don't want him to be more militaristic, and I call out his policies that hurt the poor and immigrants. If Democrats capitulate to him in those areas, I'm not afraid to call them out either.

Taking children from their parents and leaving them in cages is a new low for Trump and his administration.

However, let's focus on the Clintons, they lied too - Trump supporters.
You don't have to be a Trump supporter to be against liars and corrupt politicians, regardless of what party they're in.

If Hillary is injecting herself into the conversation by calling Trump's immigration policy cruel and referencing the Bible, why is it wrong to expose her prior stance on those issues?

Right, because it's not possible for people to talk about multiple things at once. I for one have condemned Trump's immigration policy, and I even created a post dedicated to it.

And as for past candidates/elections, there's a saying that those who don't remember history are doomed to repeat it. When someone is as anti-Trump as I am, it stands to reason they would try to analyze how the vile reality star douche became president. If that means ripping the Democrats who turned their backs on their base and capitulate to Trump, so be it.

And yet when ICE aggressively went after immigrants (many of them families) under Obama, many liberals didn't say anything. I posted a snippet from an article that said that it wasn't until Obama's second term that they really started to go after felons rather than families. That's another reason why I believe partisanship is hurting this country. Every time I hear a liberal criticize Trump for a particular policy, I point out the Democrats who also support that policy to show that's it not just Republicans who can be cruel. But instead of people acknowledging the cruelty and corruption of both parties, Dem loyalists accuse progressives of not caring about Trump. Truth be told, many establishment Dems only care about Trump's cruelty.

Trump puts an ugly face on ugly policies, but many of his policies have received bipartisan support under Republican and Democratic administrations.

That sentence reveals your deaf ear yet again. Your "also criticizing Hillary" isn't the problem. It's your lack of a sense of proportion.

Heh. No that's not the point you've been making. It's that proportion thing again.

If you want to concern yourself with proportion, be my guest. But it's hard to be proportional on a board with Hillary supporters who are as blind to the truth as Trump supporters are (and no, I'm not talking about you). When Hillary attacks Trump, am I supposed to pretend she isn't guilty of some of those things? You talk about proportion, but all too often I see Democratic partisans making excuses for their side while condemning Trump. Of course Trump should be condemned. That still doesn't mean I can pretend that the opposition is pure by default.

It's interesting that when I'm being quoted, it's only the part where I mention being critical of Hillary and Trump. The substance of why that is is never brought up. As I said before, any post I make that is exclusively anti-Trump usually receives a sarcastic or facetious reply. It's as if I'm still being told I only care about Hillary even in threads where I never mention her.

I hate to say it, but it took Trump to wake people up. Now if a smooth-talking Dem comes along who wants to implement the same policies, the pseudo-left will go right back to sleep.

Exactly. Some people think we should only talk about Trump. We shouldn't talk about Dems that are currently supporting Trump's agenda, nor past Democrats who helped put us on this path. I get that Trump's the current president, and it does make sense to condemn him for currently pushing this cruel agenda. The problem arises when people like Hillary Clinton try to rehabilitate their image by condemning him, even though they too supported similar positions. Neocons like the Bushes try to do the same thing. Even certain people who recognize the flaws of Hillary and the Dems don't really want it brought up because they're not in power. While that's true, they're still in the spotlight trying to act like they have the moral high ground. Many Congressional Dems happily support most of Trump's agenda, but again, they want the focus solely on Trump. I simply recognize both parties for what they are.

The biggest current mess in Washington is the Trump administration. 89% of Democrats did their part to prevent this nightmare from happening by voting for the only viable option, Hillary Clinton. You can easily make a perfectly valid argument that the 9% who voted for Trump and the 2% who voted third party are equally to blame (since third party votes were just as helpful to Trump as direct votes), but I don’t think it’s legitimate to pin the blame on the vast majority of Democrats, who made the sensible decision.

We're not blaming Democratic voters. We're blaming Democratic politicians who govern as and capitulate to Republicans.

Of course, when Dems go along with Trump's policies, you defend them because they're Democrats. Not that partisans ever cared about policy.

Another problem is that Dems like you continue to believe Hillary was the "sensible" solution. Her stance on immigration, foreign policy, welfare, trade, Wall Street, etc. is just as atrocious as Trump's. Instead of shaming the voters, how about shaming the Dem politicians who govern as moderate Republicans. The sensible solution was Bernie Sanders, but the Dem establishment rejected him. The Democratic nominee trashed young voters, progressives, and ignored the working class, yet still expected them to vote for her. I've never seen a candidate with such hubris that they didn't even pretend to care about their base. She took them for granted, as did her supporters. She felt entitled to our vote, yet offered us nothing.

As liberals rightly bash Trump for his immigration policy, just remember that Hillary Clinton said immigrant children fleeing violence would be sent back.
