How many languages do you speak or understand?

You forgot Norwegian. If you know Swedish fluently, you must understand a lot of Norwegian too. And at least some Danish.

That's true. Last year when my sister and I were travelling around in South America and talked to friends from Norway and Denmark we ended up speaking some sort of Scandinavian language. It all sounded very similar at the time.

Ha! My nephew is staying here tonight and he's doing homework...

Oh wow! Takes me back. I remember some of the animal names but none of the fruit. Interesting how the word for pineapple is very similar to other languages, more often than not Irish took on a variation of the English word for 'newer' vocabulary. Although strangely enough I read somewhere that the language that Irish has the most words in common with is Hungarian! It really us a strange, beautiful and mysterious language.

I speak English. I do know some Japanese words and phrases and can recognize some from years of watching anime, but I'm not fluent in it or anything. I took beginning Spanish in college, but have probably forgotten most of it.

I guessed you are an anime fan from your avatar. I must admit I've never watched any anime - I only know some of Miyazaki's movies, like Kiki's Delivery Service (our Japanese teacher at the language school in Tokyo showed it to us for listening-comprehension training, which was cool), Princess Mononoke, Nausicaa...

And as a kid, I loved the series Heidi, Pinocchio, Maya the Honey Bee, Kimba the White Lion... But the word "anime" wasn't known that time yet!

For this reason, I also understand and speak Croatian fluently, as it is very similar - at least it is to me (some people may disagree).

English is the second language I'm most fluent in and I use it in my work on a daily basis. I adore English!

I also speak Slovak very well, as I was born and now live again in Slovakia.

For this reason, I also understand Czech, which is somewhat similar to Slovak, though I can't really speak that language.

I understand German quite well and use it on my frequent trips to Austria, although I speak it with great difficulties. Basic knowledge.

Finally, I have strong Hungarian roots, so I'm familiar with some phrases in that language, but it's too difficult for me to learn.

I've never attempted to learn French, Spanish or Italian, as I'm still trying to improve my German.

Is there or have there been a language called "Serbocroatian"? I know I've at least heard that word.

And since Slovakia & Czech Republic used to be 1 country (Czechoslovakia), I would assume the languages are quite similar, or else being 1 country could have been difficult.
I still have some memory of Czechoslovakia breaking up into 2 countries, so it's got to have been in the early-mid 90s, right?

When did Yogoslavia break apart? I have memories of saying Yugoslavia, but I can't recall when it was divided. What countries made up Yugoslavia?
