A replacement thread for my favourite comedy duo. I had started another that is now lost where I had been making my way through each series of the show. I took a break after series 5 and this week I finally finished watching the last series the series in the boxset. I was a little surprised that I didn't actually really love the last series which was filmed in 2004, I think. There was another series after that 2007, but it's not included in my boxset.

The thing I didn't really like about the 2004 series was that the format was altered slightly where we have Dawn and Jennifer as writers of their show. Most the show seems filmed inside offices at the BBC where Dawn and Jennifer are supposed to be working. The film parodies were reduced and the ones they did of COLD MOUNTAIN, COLD TURKEY and TROY just wern't that funny. The budget seems to be smaller as there are less elaborate sketches. There was less of the ridiculousness that I love about French and Saunders and one thing that I really, really didn't like. They swear! They really swear and it seems kind of desperate. French and Sunders were comedy gold they didn't need to swear, ever! It kind of ruins their appeal. Part of the angle of the series was that they are seen as dated and cosy by the BBC and that there is a push to make them hip and young. It seems they were probably working that into the script as it was likely true. The comedy seems harder, a little harsh and as mentioned desperate. The sketches seem to just have random swear words and bad language shoved into them.

I remember watching this series when it was originally on TV and thinking it was very funny, but it hasn't aged well. Not in the way the other series have. It feels more dated and more time specific than even the '80s stuff.

After I finished it I was feeling a little down and so went straight on to watching ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS from the beginning and have been enjoying that. I am currently near the end of series three and it's been good to watch it all the way through. I really, really loved the New Years Eve episode with Kate O'Mara as Patsy's sister Jackie. I plan on watching it all in the next week or so.

I haven't seen much of French and Saunders eventhough it was on TV in Holland, but I always enjoyed the clips posted on the forum.
How many shows are there? Is "Let Them Eat Cake" part of F&S, or a completely different series?

I think there are 7 series, but not all episodes of the 7th series were broadcast. I have a boxset with 6 series on it, the first 5 are excellent. Let Them Eat Cake was a separate series by Dawn French I think. I was thinking about that show last night. I also remember liking that when it was on.
I would recommend the boxset of you liked the clips you saw. They are hilarious.

I am watching Absolutely Fabulous. 3 episodes per week, as a Swedish channel is broadcasting it. So far, I've only seen series 1. Series 2 begins on Monday.
I am absolutely loving it. They're so fantastically self-absorbed. Poor Saffy.

They get more horrible as they go on!

Abort! Abort! ABORT!!!!!

Just awful really but it's so funny. When I see some of the things Joanna Lumley does I just cant stop laughing. It's genius having her play Patsy. As she's the total opposite. But seeing this graceful lovely actress do this grotesque physical comedy is hilarious.

Wont play in my country... But I know the sketch well. lol

I actually wanted to post 'Lucky Bitches', but its not on youtube anymore! Which is weird, all their other stuff is still on there. The only one I could find was on Dailymotion, but the voices were about ten seconds late, unwatchable. I wonder if Joan had enough friends in high places to have it removed from youtube after Jackies death? Although I'd imagine she'd have found it funny. Incidentally Jackie Collins did once repin a photo of her and Joan I had pinned on Pinterest. I had written 'Lucky Bitches' underneath it, but she deleted that when she repinned it! :D

That's epic! Jackie Collins repined your pin on Pinterest! I didn't even know she was on Pinterest.
Lucky Bitches is great too. I think Joan would have found it funny she seems to be a fan and she did do the ABFAB movie.
Then there is this.... skip to 4.23 lol.. it's out of sync but you'll appreciate it.

Great to see those Lucky Bitches back in action!

Yeah, I thought it was pretty cool that Jackie repinned my pin. It made my day.
This was the photo.

I have a picture of Joan from that shoot on my Joan Collins door. Yes I have a door in my house that's been covered in images of Joan Collins - permanently.

Wonderful. As I may or may not have said in the thread this replaces, I was a big fan back in the day. When the first few series aired they could do no wrong with me. I'd first discovered them in Girls On Top, which led me to their BBC sketch show and then a host of other great F&S material.

Just found this.... and it's brilliant!

Oh my God. I just laughed so much I have a headache. The two funniest things on earth are deadpanning with bad grammar and corpsing. I'll be watching this again tomorrow.

I still need to check out Girls On Top. I don't think I have ever saw that? Ruby Wax was in that too wasn't she? That Madonna thing is so funny. After I get back from my holiday I can see me going on another comedy binge. I have been meaning to buy some Victoria Wood stuff too for ages.

She was indeed. And Tracy Ullman, too, in the first series. It was my favourite comedy when I was about 12 - it seemed so daring and unbelievably funny. I got it when the DVD came out and sadly it had not dated well at all. It was certainly not as funny as I remembered and nowhere near as clever as I thought it was. It's many years since my last rewatch. Maybe I should watch it sometime soon. I certainly plan to watch the whole of French & Saunders as I have the box set upstairs - all sealed and ready to crack open when I get the urge.
