Which show do your find yourself defending?

So 1980s television shows came up in a conversation with some friends of various ages. Someone actually mentioned Knots Landing. Everyone laughed, and then Dallas was mentioned
I proudly said I was a huge Knots Landing fan and Dallas was a very close second(in years 5-7).
I feel these two shows are dismissed way too easily, but I don't care. I love them, and if love is wrong, I don't want to be right!
Are there any favorite shows of yours that you find yourself defending?

Yes, I find myself quite often defending The Incredible Hulk. It’s one of my all time favorite shows. I own the entire series on DVD, which I do get teased for but it was such a big part of my childhood that I can never turn my back on it. I’ll always defend it.

Among those who discuss daytime soaps, I will continue to defend Another World from all detractors. It had the misfortune of airing in the post-Days slot on NBC in the mid-1980s and 1990s, and people tuning in expecting Days-style wackiness were of course going to be disappointed since AW was more grounded in reality. Great acting, mostly great plotlines....but it is mostly forgotten these days because it did not go the "flashy/trashy" route that some soaps tried to set themselves apart.

CW Dynasty (though ironically I hated the original) I defend all the time. I think it's 1000x better than the original. TNT Dallas seems to have become hated over time. Also, I'm a huge game show fan, so I defend a lot of those.

For me it's Blake's 7, a 70's/80's space opera from the BBC.

When it originally aired it got very good ratings but critics were not kind as it had the budget of a very basic police drama and so a lot of the special effects and sets were, well, not the best.

To this day I still absolutely love it because the cast and characters were so well portrayed that the show was driven by them, the effects etc were just added enjoyment for me.

But people still laugh that I love it and I've taken some crap from people over the years.

DALLAS I have to say is another, people just laugh when I tell them I still re-watch it and love it. They always bring the dream up! Dallas's legacy is "The Dream" for so many people...that and who shot JR. They have no idea how bloody fantastic it was.

Count me in with this. I remember buying it all on VHS back in the 90s and a couple of mates would catch bits of it and then try to take the mickey. I didn’t care because I had it on VHS and that was enough to keep me high as a kite. Then I bought it in DVD and felt even more pleased with myself.

It still pops up in conversation where I’m usually defending it.

I am the same with PRISONER CELL BLOCK H and SAPPHIRE & STEEL. Two more shows that, like BLAKE’S 7, they were cheaply made and character driven with a fantastic cast.

Cell Block H is a cult classic and I know loads of people that used to watch it on late night TV in the UK, but yes, it still gets a lot of flack, unlike Wentworth, which has been universally loved - which is only right because it was an amazing reboot.

I also loved Sapphire & Steel, although I rarely hear anyone laughing at it, they are usually fans of it or it was just too complicated for them to understand. I still think it's criminal that S&S hasn't had a reboot, it's absolutely prime for one in today's world of streaming TV.

I would have added The Tomorrow People, but apart from the theme tune, which is amazing, even I can't actually bring myself to enjoy it now, it's SOOOO cheap on re-watch.

Soaps in general. Too many people look down on them even though they may never have followed them. It's so easy to have a bad opinion of soaps and laugh them off as being filled with bad actors who have had bad plastic surgery done, cheap sets and very slow-paced ridiculous plots.

Crossroads. So many people used to ridicule the series, claim the sets were wobbly and that actors regularly forgot their lines. I never agreed with those comments and thought its production values every bit as good, if not better, than its main rival Coronation Street. I started watching when I was 7 and continued watching it until it ended in the mid 1980s and throughout that time I always challenged criticism of the show and still have fond memories of it today.

I don’t mind The Tomorrow People. But it replaced Ace of Wands, which I enjoyed more. And Ace of Wands had the creator of Sapphire & Steel writing for it. Sapphire & Steel and The Tomorrow People both had audio continuations. And The Tomorrow People had a tv reboot

I don’t think I’ve ever felt a need to defend a tv series to anyone though. I think I’m too changeable in that while I really like to hear what you think and it may influence my decision, I sort of lack the emotional connection. So I would more likely sidestep you.

Defend ??

Usually, people have to defend them from me.

Among the '80s soaps, I'm only inclined to defend KNOTS because it deserves it, but nobody ever really talks about it, so it isn't necessary.

Regarding other shows, I'm always inclined to talk in terms of "this-part-was-good/this-part-was-bad/and-here's-why" but everybody else wants to take the polarized "it's-great/it-sucks" approach, so discussion off-line is generally pointless.

Well, usually when I see it discussed online elsewhere, people are usually asking if they should leave the dream season out. Mostly they say yes.

A family friend declared to me on Monday night that it loves Knots Landing. I said nothing.

I'd love to see some old Crossroads episodes, it rarely gets any airing anywhere on TV. Really looking forward to watching the new TV drama "Nolly" by Russel T Davies when it airs eventually.

Also, Crossroads related I can't watch David Hunter seriously after he appeared in The Comic Strip's "Five go down to Dorset" where he, as Uncle Quentin, proudly announced that he was a raving homosexual....absolutely hilarious.

There are many Crossroads episodes on YouTube, mainly ones from the 1980s but I agree it should be repeated on TV.

I would defend "The Colbys", as it's my favourite of the soapy bunch.
But i don't have to, because noone seems to remember or have even seen it apart from myself. :lol:
My grandma loved it as well and used to watch it with me, but she's long gone. :(
But i still have a postcard from her from one of her holidays she always did with my grandpa, and there she wrote, i shall not forget to tape this weeks Colbys episode for her, because she can't wait to see what's Sable up to next. :cool:
