Pam and Sue Ellen eventually came into their own, but Miss Ellie kind of didn't -- sidelined even more in the closing years, even when she was still on the show.
What more would you have liked to have seen Miss Ellie do??
Set up a foundation and give it all their (her’s and Clayton’s) money and assets. The foundation could given income to live, so that’s not an issue, but it would put her at the head of a billion dollar operation. The foundation would own the land and oil of Southfork and she’d tell JR if you can find a way to get at it without drilling on South Fork, it’s yours, with the leases making her foundation even richer. She’d then give the cattle business to Gary, but since they destroyed that relationship with the dream, I guess I’d have given it to Bobby. She’d then give the house in trust to John Ross in hopes of getting Sue Ellen to return. I’d gave her play the head of the family in a much stronger and necessarily manipulative way.
Miss Ellie to JR, “I have something for you to do for me, in exchange for the oil leases.”
“What is it?”
“I want you to move into the cottage our back.”
“What! What’s going on? First you have Bobby move into Gary’s old house, now you’re telling me to leave. This doesn’t sound like you. Is this Clayton’s idea?”
“No. It’s mine. Once you’ve moved out, I’m going to suggest Sue Ellen move in to raise John Ross, where he belongs. Im going to give him the house.”
“What makes you think she’s going to leave her husband?”
“They’ve been separated, for some time. She’s living in London and he lives on his fathers country estate. If you’d bothered to pay attention to what really matters you’d know that by now.”
With a sly grin, JR says, “You’ll need more than that to get her back in Dallas.”
“With your slant drilling for Southfork’s oil from the Wade property, the foundation will have billions of dollars to give away. I’m going to ask Sue Ellen to it giveaway.”
“You’re gonna gave her run the Farlow Foundation?”
“I’m running it, but yes, Sue Ellen will give away the money. Lucy’s staying in New York. Sue Ellen will be a perfect mentor for charity work there as well. Plus Christopher needs a stable mother figure around.”
“And to do this, I have to move out?”
“And behave while she’s here.”
“You’re asking for trouble, momma.”
“JR, I’m asking for my family to be out back together and I’m will to pay you very generously for your cooperation.”
