Is there a flaw with your complete boxset of HOTEL? I have been wanting to pick it up, and it's going for around £50 including shipping from Australia but I have read there are flaws in that season 5 has episodes in the wrong order and perhaps wrongly titled episodes. I have never seen HOTEL but wasn't sure if it was totally episodic or has ongoing stories?

It was episodic with different fancy guest stars each week -- a bit like The Love Boat with posh carpets instead of an ocean. Weirdly though, the press used to pretend it was a soap - at least in the UK.

Is it as kooky silly as The Love Boat? Or more soapy semi-serious?

They said that here, too. I think it's because by 1983 nighttime soaps were more trendy than LOVE BOAT, and HOTEL also pretended to be less comedic -- which just made it funnier, but not more interesting.

I recall watching the HOTEL pilot with Bette Davis, and the promos made it look like it was gothic and victorian. But given that Aaron Spelling was producing it, I found it hard to believe it would be that atmospheric.

Needless to say, I was angry after watching the pilot. It was exactly the "landlocked LOVE BOAT" the reviewers here were describing it to be. So I rarely watched again, and every time I'd peek in, I was reminded why I didn't want to add it to my usual viewing regimen.

But, yes, the press also kept calling it a "soap".

Actually, there are flaws. At least two second-season episodes are switched (meaning that the episode was not as described on the inside episode guide), and the video quality is fair to middling (from the second season's worth forward; the first season is still as crystal-clear as it was in that standalone first-season CBS release). One second-season episode even has the credits cut off, for reasons unknown.
