Episodes 213-215 Home and Away’s first murder mystery has felt surprisingly unengaging. Perhaps it’s partly because I know how it happened so there is no mystery, even if that hasn’t stopped me finding, say, Ciji’s murder mystery thrilling on rewatches. Knowing the twist to the story isn’t helping with investment. They’re having fun with the storytelling, but perhaps that’s partly to blame. There’s been some enjoyable stuff with an earring, which seems to be the equivalent of that cassette on Sons and Daughters. It keeps changing hands and won’t go away. But it might be a MacGuffin. It seems Carly misplaced it at the scene of Gary’s death, and she’s definitely hiding something. In fact she seems to be the #1 suspect at this moment in time through her increasingly guilty behaviour. First we watch a CSI team discovering an earring on Stewart’s Point before dissolving to Carly holding the matching one. Then we see Carly throw hers into the ocean. Only for it to turn up again when Sally gives it to Bobby as an engagement present, presumably having found it on the beach (what are the odds?). Which pushes Carly’s guilt-o-meter into the red: Now the detective has shown up at Ailsa’s who has looked at it in recognition. And Bobby has conveniently walked in and also recognised it. Could the game be up? With much conjecture about the way Gary died, we’ve had a couple of flashbacks, each one slanted to show what the person telling it is trying to suggest. For instance, Alison surmises that Carly pushed Gary after he rejected her yet again, and we see her version of how it went. Then Steven jumps in to defend Carly by suggesting that Alison herself had more motive, leading to a flashback of Alison channelling Morgan Brittany by flashing her eyes and contorting her face with rage as she walks up behind Gary who is insulting her. The black and white feels effectively noir and there’s a definite feeling that something is missing. In other words, even without the linking dialogue, it’s plain that these are fantasies. The fun comes from trying to work out if any of them have elements of truth. So far, so good. But then comes a flashback that I found as unforgivable thirty years ago as I do now. Celia had been accusing Philip and Stacey of driving Gary to suicide, and asks Gary to leave the flat behind the store. On realising that he was murdered, she comes to apologise to Philip, and he has some fun with her by presenting his own distorted flashback of how he could have murdered Gary. It sets the scene with Western music that evokes The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, or some such film. Lest that be too subtle, Phil does his best highly exaggerated Clint Eastwood impression: Phil and Gary start to grapple with each other and then, at the point where Phil is about to swing Gary round and throw him into the air (complete with “comical” cartoony whooshing sounds), Gary has clearly become a stuffed Guy.
