Episodes 286-293 (...continued) The highlight of the teens’ social season in Summer Bay comes in the form of a Dirty Dancing competition organised by Martin of all people. Now, I’ve never seen Dirty Dancing (although, bizarrely, I did watch the entire TV series based on the film), but even to me the approach taken here is transparent. And it’s more than a bit naff. It’s not enough that the characters are planning an activity based on a film. No, the series has to follow the plot of the film. So the Dirty Dancing contest is a secret known only to the chosen ones; the girl on holiday who has fallen for a local is forbidden from joining in by her strict father, who eventually relents. They do the dance routine they’ve been practicing and all’s well that ends well. Kind of. Back in 1990, as a self-conscious teen I found this element a little cringeworthy to watch. There’s nothing older than yesterday’s news, and even when this was filmed in 1989 Dirty Dancing was a couple of years old. But the sight of Steven and Rebecca doing their routine - complete with lift - with looks of intense seriousness on their faces while everyone stands round and claps happily is enough to bring tears to the eyes. And not in a good way. It’s an ignominious end to Jane Hall’s time on the series. A quick search tells me that Rebecca was played by four actresses over the space of a decade, which I’d hope would be in the territory of a record. She also evidently became far more physically different with the recasts. Entering Rebecca’s name in a search on Back To The Bay brings up a picture of a blonde Instagram Barbie type and the name Rebecca Nash. I’d assumed this was a completely separate character with the same forename, but turns out nope: this is meant to be the same girl. I’ve very much enjoyed Jane’s time as Rebecca and I’m sorry to see it end as, dancing aside, I found her endearing and watchable. The competition wasn’t without its nice little moments. Like Celia and Nigel doing a little waltz: Tom Fletcher’s Dad dancing was far lower down the cringe-o-meter than Steven and Rebecca’s act. Discussing the younger couple also gave us this soapy observation: Then there was Roo getting chatted up by a guy with a Nicholas Pearce hairdo: Morag is even less impressed on learning his employment status: After a couple of days, Bobby is seeing the situation through kinder eyes when he and Roo cover the Diner due to staff shortages. She even offers him a job: When he and Alf work a shift, things start out well, but quickly take a turn for the worse: Pre-empting the audience once again, Roo is quick to point out how different Alf’s response was to Ailsa after her revelation: Ailsa herself is indisposed having had the mandatory seven months pregnant collapse: Fortunately it just turned out to be through overwork. A sign to take things easy. Meanwhile, the Dirty Dancing contest has a dramatic conclusion: continued...
