Episodes 324-330 (...continued) Tom and Alf’s lifeboat has hit shore. And the near death experience brings with it a confession from Alf that harks back to the Pilot: Tom’s response is pleasingly ambiguous and minimal. He might have given a little smile, but he’s so exhausted it’s hard to tell. It’s possible he didn’t hear. Or won’t remember. But perhaps he was struggling to process it. Perhaps he was angry. Or didn’t care. Or knew already. It could be any combination of these. It hasn’t been mentioned again since, and I find myself hoping that it won’t be picked up on again. It’s just one of those things that’s out there that remains something of a secret between the two. Back at the Bay, Pippa’s crisis has put Sally in an existential mood: Peter Vroom does sincerity with about as much subtlety as Matt Le Blanc on Friends. All the same, there’s something disarmingly sweet about the friendship between Lance and Sally. On paper, it should be a bit of a worry to people, but Pippa is far more concerned about the return of another of Sally’s old friends: Milco. I love the way this is directed: A rescue party has discovered the two missing men and they’ve been taken to hospital. And word quickly reaches Summer Bay: This leads to a great moment in which Morag, once she’s realised nothing will stop Ailsa, starts flapping and talking nineteen to the dozen in the background about how she’s going to charter a seaplane because no sister-in-law of hers who’s just had a baby is going to endure a long taxi journey. It feels very much like ad libs on the part of Cornelia Frances, but either way it’s great fun. Whether it’s by taxi or seaplane, Ailsa, Pippa and Roo arrive at the hospital en masse: And just like that the news is broken. There’s another lovely Tom/Alf scene in their darkened hospital ward when everyone else has gone and things are still and quiet: Unknown to Alf, Ailsa has neglected to contact the hospital to arrange to pick up her baby from the hospital. Pippa shows up, concerned that Ailsa’s phone isn’t working, only to find it’s all quite deliberate:
