Episodes 336-340 It’s fair to say that emotions have been running high in the Bay this week. There have been big decisions. There have been long goodbyes. There have been family tensions. There have been major meltdowns. Comings and goings have included the departure of two key original characters and the return of a supporting character not on screen for some time. The returnee - Colleen Smart - is immediately back in the thick of it. In the space of a couple of hours she manages to distress Celia, Bobby and Sally with her gossip about Frank and Roo: After overhearing the latter conversation, Sally goes all the way to the Macklin office to launch into a tirade against Roo, calling her a pig into the bargain. Roo is so shocked she takes the rest of the day off. And when Martin asks how she is, she decides to give him the juice she’s certain he wants: Donald overhearing Roo’s outburst isn’t the only irony. Up to this point, Martin and Lance had been vocally defending Roo to anyone who put her down. As had Celia, until Donald sets her straight: Donald then has to make the decision about whether or not to enlighten his daughter: I can’t think of a Donald/Bobby scene I don’t like, and this is no exception. Unless I’ve missed something, I believe this is the first time Bobby has called Donald “Dad”. There’s so much going on in the scene that it would be easy to overlook. Indeed, it’s said so casually I’m still not certain I didn’t mishear. Realising the damage that’s been done, Roo - with a little encouragement from Ailsa - comes to the diner to see Bobby. Their initial conversation is front of house and Bobby is putting the finishing touches to milkshakes with an aerosol of whipped cream. Roo follows Bobby around and even grabs her a couple of times. It’s to the series’ credit that the high road is taken and the obvious cliche of Roo ending up Faraged is avoided. The conversation continues in the kitchen. As they speak, Bobby brandishes, among other things, a large kitchen knife. Roo takes her chances and perseveres: What started off as a catfight-in-waiting became a substantial scene of moving intimacy between two young women with a complex layered relationship. And this is just the tip of the iceberg. continued...
