HBO A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Night

HBO Max has ordered another prequel to Game of Thrones to series. This one, inspired by George RR Martin's novellas, will follow the knight Dunk and his squire Egg.

It is set many years before GOT, in an age where the Targaryens are ruling Westeros, but their dragons are gone.

2 episodes out so far. I like the half-hour format and how it feels very Westeros. 100 years before GOT. Even though it has more comedy and less brutality. Some Targaryens, Baratheons and Lannisters. Dunk and Egg are nice characters with a terrific relationship.

A couple of other characters from GOT also exist. This is "only" about 80-90 years before GOT. The old characters like Walder Frey and Maester Aemon from the Wall are likely 10-15 years old in AKOTSK.

I still remember Maester Aemon called out for "Egg" before he died on GOT.

I had to Google how the Targaryens on AKOTSK are related to Daenerys and her brothers. We're seeing their great-grandfather, his siblings, the great-great grandfather etc now.

So we probably won't see how Daenerys' father, The Mad King, married his sister, Dany's mother. It's easy to see how even Dany finally went insane considering her parents were siblings. In a long line of inbreading and crazy.

I hadn't planned to watch this, as I considered myself over the GOT franchise. Between the terrible final season or two of GOT and Martin's inability to finish the novels, I've soured on the whole thing. I lasted 3 episodes into HOUSE OF THE DRAGON and nothing I've heard about it has made me curious to return.

KNIGHT wasn't even on my radar. What I had heard about it -- short episodes, humorous -- made it sound frivolous and unnecessary. I was so uncurious I hadn't even watched a trailer. It wasn't the hype that got me since that can be manufactured, but the specifics of the discussions. I found the first three episodes to be refreshingly uncomplicated. Maybe we're finally turning a page in entertainment and the obsession with chasing "peak television" is past; there's not a damn thing wrong with a solidly crafted drama with low stakes.

Even better, it looks like S2 will air next year. Nothing kills my interest in a show faster than waiting 3 years between seasons.
