I'm sure this has been brought up in the past somewhere, but if Laura had not died and Abby stayed, would there have been a place for them in the later years or had they run their course? How do you picture them in seasons 11-14?

In order to separate Laura and Greg, Laura wouldn't have had to die, Richard could have been terminally ill instead. He could have shown up in Knots Landing to spend the few months he had left with Jason and Daniel. Laura could have decided to accompany Richard as he died, which would have made Greg jealous, so that he would eventually be seduced by Paige. Laura & Greg should have been a couple like Valene & Gary, who simply belonged together, and you could have seen for several seasons how both of them tried to be happy without each other and with new partners, only to then get back together in the end.

Abby could have fallen in love with someone who saved her life, similar to Alexis with Sean Rowan in Dynasty, except that Abby's savior is actually a good guy, but since, as we know, Abby has lost her faith in love because of Charles Scott, she is unable to trust her savior and ultimately ruins this honest relationship - or if the actor in this role was a hit with the audience, there would be a happy ending after all.

Considering that she was an equal partner in the Sumner Group (per Greg's insistence when they married), there was plenty of room for story with Laura. Maybe they would finally let Jason grow up which could make plenty of other opportunities. I don't think it would serve much to break her and Greg apart, at least not permanently.

Good comments, @Monzo, I just can't see Abby need anyone saving her. She always seemed at getting out of dangerous situations, and often turning them to her advantage.
It would be interesting of she fell truly in love with a man who was bery ethical and moral.

Laura and Greg were at their most sparkling when they debated his business tactics. If they broke up, it couldn't be for a long period because they were too much fun to watch in scenes together, and it would be difficult to "engineer" encounters between them because they traveled in very different circles otherwise.

There was certainly room for both of them to stay, but had they stayed, there probably wouldn't have been any reason for Anne and Claudia in the final seasons. Well, Anne could've still done guest spots, and I suppose Claudia would've been brought on if the producers still wanted to reintroduce Stacy Galina into the show following her short stint as Mary-Frances.

Laura had so much story to be explored. Like it's been said, Richard could've come back to Knots Landing. I like the idea of him coming back to see Laura and his sons before passing, but there's also the possibility that he came back to try and win Laura back from Greg. Laura and Greg didn't need to stay permanently apart if Laura were to stay with the show, but giving them some conflict would've been nice. And that would've prevented Greg and Paige from being a couple in the later seasons.

Abby still had some tricks up sleeve that could've been exposed. I like the thought of Abby falling for a younger guy, but someone who is of good social standing and who actually loves her just as she loves him. It would've been good to see Abby in a romantic relationship that didn't have anything to do with money and power. Whether or not the romance would've been retained for the duration could've been a toss-up. Had the romance ended, Abby's leftovers could've gone to Paige, if the producers chose to retain the actor.

KNOTS LANDING could've used some of that heyday stability in the final seasons outside of Karen, Mack, Gary, and Val.

Oh, and while we're at it, I would've rather Lilimae come back instead of Aunt Ginny popping up out of nowhere.

It's a shame we already knew Joe Cooper, Karen's brother, from his short time on the show in the early years. If Joe had arrived in....say, S10 as a blank slate, then they could have re-ignited the Karen/Abby feud by writing a history between Karen's younger brother and her sister-in-law. Karen would see Joe making goo-goo eyes at Abby and lose her ever-lovin' mind, dead set on her older brother not becoming Abby's next conquest. What Karen fails to see (in her blind rage) is that Abby is making the goo-goo eyes right back. The back-story would be that Joe and Abby had met shortly after Sid and Karen married and had carried on a quiet affair back in Philadelphia before Karen "fixed Abby up" with Jeff Cunningham (Joe's college roommate). Joe still carried a torch for Abby, and over time we see that Abby feels she made a mistake letting Karen push her into dating Jeff. Over time we would learn that Karen had known about Joe and Abby's fling and that's why she pushed Jeff at Abby, which would make Abby and Joe even more angry at Karen's interference.

My version of Joe would not be the boring guy Stephen Macht played (a character created solely to help Karen through her grieving period), but instead would be a blue-collar type unimpressed by Abby's wealth and an "aw, shucks" charm like Mike Rowe from the show Dirty Jobs. Both would get a certain amount of amusement out of Karen's constant meltdowns about their growing closeness, and Mack would be friends with Joe in the same way he was with Ben.

What about a story of some project Greg wants to work on but wants to assure that Abby won't be a problem so he hires her as a consultant while Laura sets up a shell company to hire Abby for surveillance and information about the project. Once Abby is ready to reveal Sumners final cards to her employer, It's revealed to be Laura and Abby realized she got played and the only money she will get is a severance package.
