Also in this run of episodes, AIDS has now shifted from the previously-planned storyline to become a more peripheral (and offscreen) one where a friend of Chris, dying from the disease, has been ostracised and necessitates him loaning out his flat to said friend. Which in turn necessitates him moving in with the Collinses. Their discomfiture at Chris’s openness and tactility with Gordon causing the necessary tension under Number Eight’s roof. It’s had its moments, including a little speech from Chris about the consequences of driving a wedge between him and Gordon, which would result in a new partner for Gordon, with all the potential sexual health risks attached to that. It’s a little manipulative, of course, but that’s right in character for Chris. When it comes to the tensions in the hosuehold, I find myself in agreement with everyone’s points of view at times. Chris isn’t wrong that Paul and Annabelle are uptight (though as a temporary guest it’s hardly his place to point this out). Gordon is right that Chris is thoughtless. And Paul and Anna are right that Chris is a bad influence on the increasingly-aimless Gordon. And of course it’s been fun to see Paul’s pearl-clutching reactions whenever there’s a PDA between Gordon and Chris. And on this note, I’ve stumbled upon this related chat between Phil Redmond and Stiffyn Parri which touches upon these episodes in particular:
