Coronation Street Coronation Street Denies Claims That Boss Kate Oates’s Job Is At Risk

Coronation Street has rubbished tabloid claims that the job of producer Kate Oates is currently in jeopardy following a run of controversial storylines.

A show source is reported to have told The Sun that Corrie boss Oates is a “dead woman walking”, adding that, “it’s become a case of not if but when for Kate”.

Oates took over at Coronation Street in 2016, with her most notable storylines so far being Pat Phelan’s reign of terror and the sexual exploitation of Bethany Platt, the latter of which won star Lucy Fallon at the National Television Awards earlier this week.

But there have been critics of Corrie’s darker tone – veteran broadcaster Michael Parkinson commenting to Radio Times last November that Phelan’s brutal dispatching of Andy Carver had made him “recoil”.

Now, in the wake of The Sun’s story, ITV Studios’ Creative Director John Whiston has said in a statement to RadioTimes.com:

“In the last two years Kate Oates has transformed Coronation Street in the same way as she transformed Emmerdale when she was there.

“The show is now chock full of gripping, talked-about storylines, is tackling groundbreaking social issues and, most importantly for a commercial channel such as ITV is delivering strong ratings, Coronation Street’s audience share is up year on year, an impressive feat for a 57 year old soap on our screens six times a week.”

Consolidated ratings for Christmas 2017 saw Coronation Street marginally beat rival EastEnders – the highest-rated Corrie episode netting 8.18million (SD +HD) against 8.13million (SD+HD) for the BBC1 soap, according to figures released by Barb.

Kate Oates has quite a heightened style of storytelling. Good or bad, there's no denying that Corrie has been more of a talking point in recent months.

It seems the knives are out for Kate Oates with the tabloids, first the Daily Star, now The Sun, i know 99.9% of what is in the papers is made up, but even so. Have itv upset someone?

The upside is, if they are gunning for CS, they will leave EE alone for abit. Every cloud. :)

I feel Kate Oates did a fantastic job with Emmerdale a few years back, she acknowledged its rich history as well as setting the soap up for the future too.

However I'm actually not that impressed with her work on Corrie, other than the Grooming storyline with Bethany, I think Corrie has gone too far with the long, laborious and quite frankly boring Phelan storyline, the guy is so obviously a sinister git I'd be insisting Manchester Police on arresting him, he's too pantomime, he's not so much JR Ewing of 1978-1984 era of DALLAS but more the overly, panto "bad guy" JR of the 1989-1991 era.

I also feel that its trying too hard to be like and outdo Richard Hillman back in the early noughties, the difference is between the two of them is that Richard Hillman really was the guy next door who had every one fooled, I don't get that same feeling with
Pat Phelan, but hey ho that's just me.
