The plot thickens...</p><p></p><p>*</p><p></p><p><strong><u>Chapter sixteen</u></strong></p><p></p><p> </p><p></p><p> Christopher and Bobby were out working the ranch. They were on horseback, moving some cattle from one part of the ranch to another when suddenly a Jeep drove up to them. Noticing how Bum got out of it Bobby got a bad feeling in the pit of his stomach that something was wrong. But not wanting to show it he plastered on a smile, as he held in his horse. “Hi Bum! What brings you out to Southfork?”</p><p></p><p> “I’ve got some news that I figured I’d tell you in person,” Bum said.</p><p></p><p> “Oh,” Bobby raised an eyebrow. “So is it bad news?”</p><p></p><p> “I’m afraid so,” Bum sighed.</p><p></p><p> “Is this another piece of JR’s masterpiece?” Bobby asked, as he and Christopher got off their horses.</p><p></p><p> “No,” Bum shook his head. “This is something Christopher asked me to check up for him.”</p><p></p><p> “Oh so it’s about mom,” Christopher said and Bobby flinched when he heard that. Noticing his father’s reaction Christopher elaborated, “I asked Bum to look into mom’s accident.”</p><p></p><p> “What for?” Bobby asked a bit guarded. </p><p></p><p> “Because I think it might not have been an accident,” Christopher said. “I mean aunt Katherine was behind the kidnapping so it wouldn’t surprise me if she was behind the accident too...”</p><p></p><p> “Christopher please,” Bobby grimaced as it was painful for him to think about that now when he knew the truth. Knowing that Pam had been kidnapped had changed everything and it filled him with so many regrets for what might have been and yet he didn’t want it to matter since he was married to Ann now. “It all happened 28 years ago so what does it matter now?”</p><p></p><p> “It matters to me,” Christopher said before turning to Bum, “So what did you find out?”</p><p></p><p> “Well I think your hunch might have been right,” Bum sighed.</p><p></p><p> “So it wasn’t an accident?” Bobby dropped his chin, as he had never ever questioned that before.</p><p></p><p> “No I’ve managed to track down an eyewitness and it seems like the truck deliberately drove out in front of your wife’s car,” Bum said and hearing that made Bobby feel like someone had stabbed him in the heart. “It caused your wife to crash with quite an impact too. She was really lucky to have survived that crash. I don’t think she would have if that fire truck hadn’t come driving by.”</p><p></p><p> “I can’t believe this,” Bobby shook his head in disbelief. “Who would have wanted to hurt Pam?”</p><p></p><p> “Was it Katherine?” Christopher asked.</p><p></p><p> “No,” Bum shook his head. “She was living in California at the time of the crash. But you do know the man who owns that truck.”</p><p></p><p> “We do?” Bobby’s jaw clenched at that.</p><p></p><p> “Yeah the truck who was involved in Pam’s accident was registered to <em>Ryland Transports</em>.”</p><p></p><p> Hearing that Bobby felt like someone had just kicked him in the stomach, “Ryland was behind this?” Bobby asked surprised, as he hadn’t seen that one coming.</p><p></p><p> “Yeah I don’t know his motif but it sure looks that way,” Bum said.</p><p></p><p> “Oh I’ll find out his motif alright and I swear if he was behind this he won’t live much longer to regret it,” Bobby clenched his fists as now he was seeing red. “Christopher are you coming?” Bobby asked as he sat up on his horse again. “I think it’s about time we pay Ryland a little visit.” Bobby then rode off in a hurry.</p><p></p><p> Christopher looked from his father to Bum, “Thanks for the info Bum. You’ll send me that report and I’ll make sure to pay you for it, okay?”</p><p></p><p> “Okay,” Bum said. “Oh and I’m sorry to always be the bearer of bad news.”</p><p></p><p> “It’s not your fault,” Christopher said. “Now if you’ll excuse me I’ll better go with my dad before he’ll kill Harris Ryland!” Christopher said as he sat up on his horse and rode off after his dad, leaving two stunned ranch hands standing in the middle of the land wondering what was going on.</p></blockquote><p></p>
