On April 11, 2021 a police officer in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota stopped a car owned and driven by Daunte Wright. During the course of the traffic stop officer Kimberly Potter shot Wright in the chest. Wright drove a short distance before colliding with another vehicle and struck a concrete barrier. Officers attempted to perform CPR but were unsuccessful, Wright was later pronounced dead at the scene. The mainstream media covered this as another shooting of an unarmed Black man by a White police officer with the Associated Press headline reading: Daunte Wright: Doting dad, ballplayer, slain by police. Many news outlets erroneously stated that Wright was stopped because he had an air freshener hanging from his rearview mirror; he was actually stopped for driving with an expired registration.
