In fact it was intended for his Wycliffe character to just be a guest, but HTV expanded his role to a main one when Jimmy Yuill became ill, and they were rewriting to explain his absence.  (The whole Yuill thing was the main factor in Wycliffe ending).(Wycliffe starred someone called Helen Masters, which reminds me of Prisoner as there was a character of that name)</blockquote>
