Joe Biden: Rich Are As Patriotic As The Poor

Former Vice President Joe Biden on Tuesday told an Alabama crowd that wealthy Americans are “as patriotic” as Americans with a lower income, making a point of contrasting his remark with the rhetoric of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.).

Stumping for Democratic Senate nominee Doug Jones, Biden said the former U.S. attorney grasps “fairness” when it comes to the issue of taxes.

“Doug understands about tax fairness,” Biden told the crowd. “Guys, the wealthy are as patriotic as the poor. I know Bernie doesn’t like me saying that, but they are.”

The comment comes amidst the debate over tax reform, for which President Trump and congressional Republicans last week unveiled a new plan that would both lower the corporate tax rate and cut the number of individual tax rates.

Sanders has railed against the Republican tax framework and has historically slammed tax cuts for the wealthy and for corporations. Both Sanders and Biden are widely viewed as potential contenders for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020.

Biden's visit to Alabama comes as Jones aims to defeat Republican nominee Roy Moore in a state that hasn't had a Democratic senator since Howell Heflin retired in 1997.

It's possible a more centrist approach on taxes and other issues could help Jones, who is a decided underdog in the race.

I'm tired of sell outs. I get that the goal of the establishment is for Democrats to win, but at what cost? What's the point of having Democrats who talk like Republicans? That gets us nowhere. And in deeply conservative states like Alabama, they're far more likely to choose Republican over Republican lite any day. His remarks follow Trump's proposed tax cuts, which would be the biggest giveaway to the rich in history. Establishment Dems like Biden have a tin ear, and they're basically giving a middle finger to those struggling financially.

In 2008, Biden said that rich people paying higher taxes is "patriotic" because it would "help get America out of the rut." That's quite a contrast from what he's saying today. Biden, Howard Dean, the Clintons, Barack Obama, and many other Democrats have all traded in their progressive credentials in favor of shitty centrism, and it's a sad sight to see.

The fact that Biden threw Bernie under the bus is rather scummy. Not only is he one of the few politicians addressing income inequality, he never said that the rich can't be patriotic. In fact, he posted a video of rich people who don't want Trump's tax cuts because they do care about the poor and middle class. However, it's obvious that Biden wasn't referring to them when he said the rich are patriotic. His comments were timed to help a centrist in Alabama, and he referred to "tax fairness" right after Trump proposes huge tax cuts for the wealthy.

So much for Biden's concern for the middle class.
