Coronation Street Julie Goodyear: Coronation Street's Bet Lynch actress has dementia

So sad to hear this news about my favourite ever Corrie actress:(

Julie Goodyear, known for playing Bet Lynch in Coronation Street, has received a "heartbreaking diagnosis" of dementia, her husband has said.

The actress had sought medical advice after "suffering forgetfulness" but there was now "no hope of a reversal in the situation", Scott Brand said.

Goodyear, 81, played the leopard-skin-loving barmaid from 1966 to 2003.

"My darling wife and I have had to come to terms with this heartbreaking diagnosis," Mr Brand said.

"Unfortunately, Julie has been suffering forgetfulness for some time and we have been seeking medical advice and assistance - but we now know that there is no hope of a reversal in the situation and that her condition will get progressively, and perhaps speedily, worse.

"We have taken the decision to publicly announce the diagnosis as Julie still loves visiting friends and eating out. Inevitably, she is recognised and fans love to meet her - and she them - but she can get confused, particularly if she is tired. I hope people will understand."

Thanks to Goodyear, Bet Lynch became one of the ITV soap opera's longest-serving and best-loved characters.

The actress also appeared on reality shows such as Celebrity Big Brother and Celebrity Fit Club.

Im sorry to hear that (cock) Julie Goodyear belongs to the Glory days of TV and Corrie - from Annie Walker to Alex Gilroy, was great with the one liners, put downs and could also make you cry

There are too few characters in Corrie now who remind me of the glory years (and why I tuned out)

Sad news, but what a great career she had - I was also sorry to hear that Jane Rossington aka Jill from Crossroads has dementia - sad

Julie will always be busty Bet, in the leopard print, big earings and a big smile - she is a Corrie legend

I had no idea that the Crossroads actress, Jane Rossington had been diagnosed with Alzheimers last year. :(

Sadly, as for Julie’s diagnosis, this will almost certainly put paid to any future appearances in Corrie for the character of Bet even if it had only been for a handful of episodes. :(

Such a cruel disease. My Uncle recently passed away after suffering from this for several years. Unfortunately he had the violent kind and was sedated for his last few years. It broke my dad's heart not recognizing the brother he grew up with. I'm glad Julie's family have released the information so if she is out and about the fans will respect some distance.

Apparently it was reported last year but I didn’t know about it until I went Googling to see why she hadn’t been featured in Nolly.

The Blackpool episodes from 20 years ago now are likely to be the last we’ve seen of Bet. I’m glad she came back to do them as it gave a bit of closure rather than the character finishing with her abrupt exit in 2002.
