Mockumentaries can be fun, pranks can be fun, actors playing themselves can be fun. Doing it all at once....it just seems pointless and unsatisfactory. And very lazy.
James Marsden as the celebrity juror plays playing himself because, according to the premise of the mockumentary, every detail is perfectly staged. Which really only makes sense if that's happening in front of the person who's being pranked, and that's not exactly how it plays out.
The self-awareness of the characters as characters takes all the spontaneous quirk out of it so where's the payoff from a comedic point of view? And it's not like there was a change that anyone could fail to prank the victim who's making the mockumentary because the (fake) victim is too (faked) gullible to suspect anything to be (fake) faked.
I only watched the first episode and also the last one because I figured there would be a (fake) reason for a (faked) prank that seems pretty large in scope. No explanation was given and it just leaves a very cynical aftertaste, as if it was meant to be hated.
