The finale episode of The Haves and the Have Nots might very well belong in this thread for two reasons: quantity AND quality. Without going into too much detail, the series ended with basically the entire cast being murdered (with the exception of one principal character surviving). In the span of one surprising hour, we had
Wyatt die of an overdose (not a murder, per se, but still dead)
David, Jeffrey and Madison killed by a package bomb
Benny gunned down
Veronica gunned down
Katheryn strangled in prison
Candace drowned in a bathtub
Jim ran over with a car
Hanna, the lone survivor, will need to stock up on black dresses. But since she inherited Katheryn's $250 million fortune by default, shopping will not be an issue.

My first shocking TV deaths as a kid/teenager were
Tasha Yar - Star Trek TNG
because it was so unexpected for me
and also one of the saddest was
Sid Fairgate - Knots Landing
I was baffling for me to experience that a major character could die. The producers played that really well - rushing Sid into surgery only to lose him permanently. It was sad beyond words.
As I grew older one got more and more the feeling if a character doesn't make it to the end. But there were some real surprises which were both shocking and sad.

- It was nearly the same when Krystle fell into a coma ... the soul of the show was gone. Both shows were very similar in their last year: the evil queens were absent (Alexis) /in a coma (Angela) # the good ones were dead (Maggie) or in a coma (Krystle) # only one leading man (Blake, Lance) was in every episode # new rivals (Sable & Sharpe) ruled the show and both seasons hard a dark tone (for good on Dynasty but for bad on FC) ...
- they handled it really good this way ... if he wasn´t in the new credits you would know something is happening
KL was very good in killing its psychos and FC killed a lot of its main player (Melissa & Terry was a big mistake!) ...
On "Santa Barbara" killing Gina´s niece Healey was shocking for me.
Killing April and Bobby (Dallas) was shocking.
Even it was "only" a coma it felt like a death and was shocking to see Krystle (Dynasty) waving good-bye and Angela nearly get killed ...

Was reading back my old posts and I cant believe I missed out Rupert Friend as Peter Quinn from Homeland, that was shocking and I have to say I missed him in the show after his untimely death in NY

The other person was villain Sonja Wiebe who hated her brother Martin's girlfriend Flo. When Flo had lost her memory after a plane crash in North Africa, Sonja made her believe that Martin tried to kill her, so Flo stayed with beduins in the desert and left her old life behind. Six months later, for the show's 2500th episode in June 2002, a still amnesic Flo returned to Berlin, right when a wedding took place in the show's main pub. Sonja spotted Flo and tried to lock her in a back-room. The two women got into a fight and accidentally caused a fire. When a gas bottle exploded, the whole pub was destroyed, with several characters being trapped in the basement. Sonja and Martin were among them. Sonja was injured and begged Martin for forgiveness. Then she died. While everyone else was rescued and Martin and Flo received their happy ending (barf), the episode finished with a paramedic pulling a blanket over Sonja's corpse.

- oh this was the time I watched this soap. I have to say I was happy when Chrissie died ... I didn´t like her at all but Sonja was a big loos. Back then the show was so good with so many good characters ... than Flo, Martin, Andy, Sonja´s sister and most of my beloved ones left so did I ...

The final episode of Blakes 7 has to rank high in terms of shocking deaths as all the crew of Scorpio were killed off. 
Niall's death was shocking and he also ran over Max too never forgot it cause it aired round the same time as my Granddad dying.
The spiker got spiked lol loved it.

Hollyoaks has just done four deaths in episodes set within a day. Not bad going. Maya shot. Sylver being deliberately left by his little stepson (a little chap who is great-grandson and first cousin twice removed of two of the show’s most infamous serial killers) to die. And Celeste dying in the aftermath of the explosion. Marnie Nightingale (Linda Gray played the character’s mother) dying the next day, outside the hospital from her injuries. Not bad going. If you see what I mean.
