Well maybe tomorrow then?”</p><p></p><p>“Audrina has a pediatrician appointment.” Kirby said, continuing to lie. Yes, Audrina had an appointment, but it wasn’t tomorrow.</p><p></p><p>“Kirby dear,” Alexis began in a scolding tone, “now whether we like it or not, we are family. And I have a right to be a part of Audrina’s life…”</p><p></p><p>“You killed my father.” Kirby said in a cold tone. “And don’t try and go around me to Adam. I don’t want to see you and I don’t want my daughter near you.”</p><p></p><p>Kirby hung up and sighed. She knew Alexis would go running to Adam about what she had said. Kirby decided she would deal with it when Adam confronted her over it.</p><p></p><p>She turned and stopped short!</p><p></p><p>Krystle had been standing there the whole time! Kirby looked down. She liked Krystle and she felt bad including her in that lie she told to Alexis.</p><p></p><p>“How much did you overhear?” Kirby asked quietly.</p><p></p><p>“Enough to know that we have a lunch date today.” Krystle said with a wry smile.</p><p></p><p>Kirby did not bother to hide her guilty facial expression.</p><p></p><p>“I’m sorry to drag you into my problems with Alexis. I just…I can’t deal with her right now. This whole thing about Adam’s possibly being King Galen’s son is…I guess it’s weighing on my mind.” Kirby admitted.</p><p></p><p>Krystle reached for Kirby’s hands and clasped them within her own.</p><p></p><p>“I know Caress seems…well…destructive. But Alexis let her rot in a foreign prison for something she did not do. I think this whole ‘Adam could be King Galen’s son’ is just a way to sell more books. There is nothing to this.” Krystle said firmly.</p><p></p><p>Kirby didn’t want to argue with Krystle, but she remembered hearing about a time when Alexis alleged that Fallon was the late Cecil Colby’s child, just so she could get back at Blake. The woman had no qualms about hurting her children to get what she wanted. And Kirby did not want Adam or Audrina hurt by Caress’s allegations.</p><p></p><p>The phone in the hallway rang again and Gerard answered it. He quickly looked at Krystle, before setting down the phone again.</p><p></p><p>“Mrs. Carrington, Miss Devereaux is calling for you.”</p><p></p><p>Krystle frowned and let go of Kirby’s hands to walk over to the phone. It was as Krystle picked it up, that the front door opened and Amanda came in, wearing a white, half length fur. </p><p></p><p>Amanda gave Kirby a smile as she swept through the front hall and towards the stairs. She glanced over at Krystle and heard Dominique’s name being spoken. </p><p></p><p>“Is everything alright?” Amanda asked casually.</p><p></p><p>Kirby decided that now was the time to have a quiet chat with her sister-in-law about this ‘Moldavian Heir’ business. </p><p></p><p>“Elena came by here this morning. She was talking about how Adam is the first born son of Galen…again. It upset Blake and I am sure Michael cannot be too pleased.” Kirby began.</p><p></p><p>Amanda shrugged.</p><p></p><p>“He is not pleased. No one is. Mummy swears her sister is lying just to sell a book. I wouldn’t worry about it, Kirby.” she said and began to walk towards the stairs.</p><p></p><p>But Kirby had more to say.</p><p></p><p>“Elena bowed to us, Amanda. If your husband had actually been home, he would not have liked it.” Kirby warned her. It was on the tip of her tongue to add that if Amanda had been here in this house this morning, instead of with Michael Culhane, this wouldn’t have to be explained to her.</p><p></p><p>Amanda turned away from the staircase and faced Kirby.</p><p></p><p>“Michael has shut me out of all things that are royal. He has shut me out of his life in general, Kirby. I cannot make him do anything. I cannot even talk to him.” Amanda said, just as Krystle approached them. She had finished up her call and heard Amanda’s rather sad sounding words.</p><p></p><p>“I think the three of us should go to lunch—someplace else other than La Mirage.” Krystle said with a soft smile. Kirby and Amanda smiled back at her, unaware that Krystle’s phone call with Dominique had been worrisome. So much so that Dominique was flying to Denver alone so that she could speak to Blake and Krystle—alone.</p><p></p><p>****</p><p></p><p><strong>DENVER CARRINGTON-</strong></p><p></p><p>Alexis knew she would have to choose her words carefully, when she spoke to Adam about Kirby. She stepped off of the elevator and headed straight to her oldest son’s office. It was as she was nearing the door, that Alexis stopped short, when Adam’s secretary, a decidedly uninteresting woman named, Dana Waring, stepped out and smiled at her.</p><p></p><p>“Mrs. Dexter! You startled me!”</p><p></p><p>“Yes, well is my son in?” Alexis asked, trying to hide her boredom.</p><p></p><p>“Yes, he is. It was good to see you.” Dana said and scurried past her. Alexis murmured an appropriate, polite response before pushing the office door open. Adam was at his desk, looking over some papers. He looked up when his mother walked in, then slammed the door behind her!</p><p></p><p>“Mother? To what do I owe the pleasure?” Adam asked. He set his papers down and stood up, buttoning his suit jacket.</p><p></p><p>“Your insolent wife is why I am here, darling! I invited Kirby to lunch and was rudely turned down. Your wife is keeping me from Audrina! Now I expect you to do something about her.”</p><p></p><p>“Mother,” Adam said in a chastising tone, “let us not pretend as if you do not know why Kirby does not like you. She blames you for her father’s death.”</p><p></p><p>“Darling, really! Did I specifically tell Joseph to kill himself? No! And I would have never <strong>REALLY</strong> told Kirby anything about her mother.”</p><p></p><p>“And yet you did.” Adam said wryly. Personally, he didn’t think that this problem was something that couldn’t be worked out. Over time. Time being the operative word.</p><p></p><p>“Alright, Adam. I know that it is on me to try to make amends. And I am willing to do that…to a certain extent. But Kirby has to try too! She’s trying to make Krystle Audrina’s grandmother and I won’t have it!” Alexis huffed.</p><p></p><p>Adam walked over to his mother and gently placed his hands on her shoulders.</p><p></p><p>“Kirby knows you are Audrina’s grandmother. I will deal with my wife. And I want you to deal with Caress.” Adam said pointedly.</p><p></p><p>Alexis raised a brow.</p><p></p><p>“Come now, darling, is it really so terrible that people think that you could be the next rightful King of Moldavia?”</p><p></p><p>“Mother,” Adam warned, “you almost died over there because of terrorists that were unhappy with King Galen. I don’t want them thinking that they can somehow put me on the throne. Do something about your sister.”</p><p></p><p>“Adam, I would never put you in that kind of danger. And I have already purchased the publishing house that has agreed to circulate that piece of trash. Caress’s book will never see the light of day.” Alexis said in a soothing tone.</p><p></p><p>Adam slowly removed his hands from his mother’s shoulders.</p><p></p><p>“I am very happy to hear that, Mother. This whole thing isn’t just distressing to me. Father is unhappy that there is any question of my paternity. He confided in me about that ‘thing’ with Fallon, years ago.”</p><p></p><p>Alexis rolled her eyes!</p><p></p><p>“Oh he did, did he? It is just like your father to blame me for something that I have nothing to do with! I cannot help it, if my sister writes outright lies about me!”</p><p></p><p>Now Adam lifted a brow!</p><p></p><p>“Somehow, Mother, I think you can. I don’t know exactly what is going on between you two, but you need to resolve it before it hurts Kirby or Audrina. Because if it does, Kirby and I will have to do what it takes to protect our daughter.”</p><p></p><p>Alexis sensed a threat. But she told herself she would deal with Adam and Kirby…or more specifically, Kirby, when the appropriate moment came. She smiled at Adam, patting his face, as her thoughts wandered to her other son. Steven and Claudia’s marriage was falling apart. People were coming between them. Alexis planned to head back over to ColbyCo and speak with Steven about it, when the time was right.
