I watched Joyeux Noel (Merry Christmas) over the weekend. It's a film that tells the true story of the First World War Christmas truce between France, Germany and the UK. A wonderfully moving story which highlighted the futility of war.

I think while watching it some dust or something got into my eyes because they started to water.

Oh, and I usually try to see THE HOMECOMING: A CHRISTMAS STORY (1971) -- although most copies tend to be cut, or were. It served as the de facto pilot for The Waltons series, with Patricia Neal as Olivia the mother, Andrew Duggan as the father, and Candace Bergen's dad as grandpa (instead of Michael Learned, Ralph Waite, and Will Geer, respectively).

I always liked the first five year or so of The Waltons (and found it much less maudlin than Little House -- which always seemed marred, frame by frame, by Michael Landon's perversities and ego, rendering that series unwatchable for me, although the photography and music were nice) but HOMECOMING is a bit more affecting than The Waltons series it inspired just because HOMECOMING has more of that early-'70s wintry melancholy, that deeply heartbroken vibe which made Christmas stuff as effective as having been shot in, say, the 1940s.

I never miss the 1951 version of A CHRISTMAS CAROL (aka: SCROOGE) with Alastair Sim, arguably the best version of Dickens' tale. I always try to watch it very late Christmas Eve. It just seems right.

But I don't watch it colorized:

It's time for The Nightmare Before Christmas this week!!!

PS: Showed it to some of my students last year --- they HATED it. o_O

Did they say why they hated it??

Has anybody ever seen this old 1969 TV movie, SILENT NIGHT, LONELY NIGHT with Shirley Jones and Lloyd Bridges, directed by Daniel Petrie? (I haven't seen it in forever, as TV movies tend to disappear, no matter the quality).
