Thanks for posting. Was going to post but wasn't sure who would remember him. I do. I think it was him who announced the capsizing of the Herald of Free Enterprise in 1987. He will be missed. Fine journalist. May he rest in peace.

Curiously, I know very little about him as a person, or even as a journalist. To me he's just this avuncular authority figure whose comforting familiarity made bad news seem slightly more palatable.

I do remember him getting some backlash after Tie-gate though.

Yes. Having worked for the BBC for many years in various capacities, presenters are expected to have a black tie/top/dress on standby just in case. It is more relaxed now than it used to be though.

Yes, very much so. Peter Sissons, like so many of his generation, was a superb broadcaster and always judged the correct levels of gravitas as the occasion merited it. In stark contrast to some of today's individuals, such as the bovine stupidity of Piers Morgan.

Quite simply, a television news giant.

As a broadcaster, I would place him amongst the likes of Alastair Burnet and Question Time inquisitor, Sir Robin Day.

I will remember him best though as the original newscaster on the launch of ITN's pioneering channel 4 news in the early 1980s.

Sad to hear this news but he lived a good age.

I remember hearing him in one clip talking about the 9/11 attacks as if they were "terrorist barbarism."
