Questions Regarding Season 9

Was Jane Wyman originally going to return for those last few episodes, or was that decided at the last minute? I've read where she went against doctor's orders to appear, but if that's the case, what was the original plan? Were they going to leave her in a coma had the show actually been picked up for one more season? Does anyone know how the season would have played out had it been renewed? I know it was far from a possibility, but humor me, please.

Was Rod Taylor always going to be written out in such an abrupt manner, or did this happen because the show was on the way out. Of course, if memory serves correctly, they didn't know quite yet that the series had been officially cancelled when he left. However, one may take note of the fact that he really didn't have much attaching him to the series by this point. No more Melissa. No Nick or Ben. Angela was in a coma. He lost his attempt to gain Falcon Crest. Even had Angela returned, or when she did return, there wouldn't have been much left for his character to do.

I think bringing back 2-3 main characters and leaving out most of the new ones would have been wiser. The character of Michael Sharpe was fine, but the cheaper payment for all the young characters was financially and story-wise a move they tried to keep the show alive but it failed to link with me as a viewer. Same with Wendy Philipps.
