About twenty years ago my mother was in our small, local supermarket and this happened. It was about a week after Thanksgiving, so there were all these leftover, frozen turkeys piled in the bottom of the upright freezer cases. She opened one of the glass doors to get something out and a frozen turkey fell out and broke her big toe. From the way my mom tells the story, she was hopping around saying words no well-mannered Southern woman normally uses in public, and the manager/co-owner came running to her aid. "What can I do? Do you need me to call an ambulance?" he was firing questions at her in a panic, so she told him to shut up! She needed to sit down, so he got a rolling desk chair out of the office and sat her down. She said he was in a panic and she was in pain, but the way he was acting irritated her---he was likely afraid she was going to sue. But this was a small town, and self-respect wins out over greed every time. She had known the manager since he was a child and this was the only grocery store within a half-hour's drive. If she had sued him, she said she would never be able to show her face in that grocery store again, and she wasn't about to drive 30 minutes every time she needed a loaf of bread. So she had him pay her medical bills and they called it even. And from that day forward, we refer to this as The Day That Frozen Turkey Attacked Mama In the IGA. We've never had turkey for Thanksgiving again, either.
