There are episodes and movies he doesn't even know (except the one he directed) because he doesn't like how he looks or behaves; he calls it "so painful".

not really i doubt he's seen a lot of the things he's done some actors/actress don't like to watch themselves on screen because all they see is how they could have done this or that scene differently rather than the plot. now Samuel L. Jackson has no problem watching his own stuff and does it all the time. Christopher Lee in the 40's and 50's used to be forced to go and watch himself on screen after he hit it big i think he i think went to certain films like the lord of the ring films for example i think he want too and so no it doesn't surprise me that Shatner has never seen it

I bet this is far more common in Hollywood than we think. Watching urself on screen must be very difficult to do without honestly over-critiquing ur performance. I would imagine it must be tough for them to enjoy a movie or show they’re in for this reason.

exactly i'm curious on the percentage who doesn't watch them own stuff over the percentage that do. i'm not an actor so i dunno maybe i wouldn't mind seeing my own stuff if did do movies or i may crack on my own performance i really have no idea i've never acted in my life in a film or on stage for that matter.

I believe Patrick Duffy of Dallas fame has also gone record to say he never watched Dallas. Perhaps it's not so much as a vanity thing but working long hours on sets.

Yeah a lot of actors don't like to watch themselves on TV. They sub-consciously critique their own performances.
Of course, there's also probably various roles and show's that they were in that they didn't care for afterwards too.

Ellen Pompeo of Grey's Anatomy said not that long ago that she's only seen only i think a handful of episodes i believe. many were shocked i think to hear that i was a little bit don't get me wrong but not a whole hell of a lot to be honest. she's got kids and when you have kids what do you do spend your free time with your kids or husband or wife? or do you watch your own show that you are currently on? my guess is she wants nothing to do with the show when she's not there as i would be like if it were me.

ya know one thing you can give Shatner credit for is he can laugh at himself i can respect a guy who can laugh at himself or a woman that can laugh at herself.
what Shatner doesn't realize is that back in the day he did use to act like that though maybe not as bad as say Kevin Pollack shows him act but he did talk like that. he no longer does though, i think i read or saw him talk i forget which where he was talking about how he did that intentional on the Original show cause the material was so out there i cant' remember what all he said. but he no longer talks like that watch Boston Legal for proof. i can't believe he's gonna be f.. 91 this year can anyone?

There are so many big names actors that hate watching themselves, they cannot remove themselves from self critiquing or they hate they way they look or sound, it's a very common thing.
Shatner is one of those actors who gets on and does what he needs to then moves on. Like many actors from "cult series" he's come to respect his role as Kirk rather than habour a grudge as many do as they feel they want to be known for many roles, not just 1 or 2.
I've always liked the guy, he comes across as kooky and fun and he was incredible in Boston Legal - for me his best role to date.

He's a decent actor, but his STAR TREK costars don't speak terribly well of him.

No they didn't to be fair but he did get on well (on and off) with Nimoy, but Sulu & Scotty were not his biggest fans.

didn't he say that he used to take himself to seriously? i loved him in Boston Legal and yes that is easily his best role for me it's ahead of Star Trek and while i love Star Trek there is on other like Denny Crane. though seeing his fat ass in Boxers i could have lived without. i also think he's gotten better as an actor as well. to use an example how different his acting style is look at his Twilight Zone episodes and than watch a star trek episode you can easily see the style is vastly different at least i can. i think Shatner played it more so for Camp than anything. which is why people pick on his acting

Yeah. However George Takei comes across as very bitter when he starts belittling Shatner.
Don't get me wrong we don't know what went on when the original Star Trek was being filmed.
I just wish George wouldn't be so obviously bitter about it.
Anyway I love original Star Trek, it was a great show.

you saying that made me think of that Brilliant SNL skit that Shatner did in (1986) where he's at a fan Convention asking the 15 people who are there don't you people have lives? can't you find a girlfriend? and went on a funny ass rant. what really did make me sad is that he now regrets doing that skit i love it though cause it shows that he can laugh at himself as i said or things he's done. i think there prolly are too many Star Trek fans who just didn't find it funny but i did and i'm a fan oh well you can't please everyone. much like how Billy Joel for example doesn't like certain songs of his because the public didn't react well to certain ones that's just to use an old term hogwash. i think if you had more stars make fun of things that made them famous the world at least to a small degree would be better.
that doesn't mean they don't respect it, hell Robert Pattison sorry about my bad spelling called Edward a Pussy while being interviewed when he was promoting one of the Twilight films. that just makes me laugh cause he's not wrong

William Shatner is still my favorite ST captain. Not because he was first, but because he seemed the most "human" with bravery,
Proactiveness, compulsiveness and fallibility,. I thought he combined those traits well.

Original Star Trek fans are like original Doctor Who fans, they hold the original show in high regard because it was the first of it's kind.
Some Star Trek fans are even Doctor Who fans too, like myself.
I was always a Star Trek fan thanks to my Dad, who also enjoyed Doctor Who too.
My parents both enjoyed Dallas which is what got me into that show!
I have continued the legacy by continuing to watch Doctor Who & the various Star Trek spin off's.
TV would be a poorer place without Star Trek & Doctor Who in it.
Rest In Peace Dallas, you won't be forgotten.

for me i started out seeing the films with the Original cast my grandmother who passed way in Jan. of (1994) was a Star Trek fan she would rent movies and than tape them for herself and than me and my family would borrow them and watch them damn i miss that.
it was years before i even got around to watching the Original show at all, i saw the films first the OG cast i mean, than i had gotten a book out of the Library and there was i think 3 volumes they were of the original show episodes kinda like how Doctor who used to do them back in the day. i think one volume was season 1 for example and i don't remember what order they were in but i read a couple of episodes before i ever saw the actual show. but the first Star Trek show i saw was The Next Generation. that was still on the air when i started watching it back in the day.
but i am a bigger doctor who fan i think than Star Trek. i do own the original star trek series on bluray though. the complete series i mean. and as i said on how i became a Dallas fan my dad watched the entire run and when it was on he he it was always after i went to bed since i was so young at the time. i never got to see a single episode cause they'd send my ass to bed though i would hear the theme song though or i'd watch the opening theme than bed time. it was really on a lark one day after my buddy Frankie who died about 10 years ago had bought the 1st set on dvd. he watched it first than i borrowed it and fell in love with it after seeing it on his shelf for ages upon ages.
