This decade also saw the Gulf war, the Rwandan genocide, the start of the Somali civil war and in 1996 the Talibans seized control over Afghanistan. The decade also saw a rise in terror attacks in the USA and school shootings like the one in Columbine became more common.   Some notable world leaders include: Bill Clinton, Boris Yeltsin, Nelson Mandela, Slobodan Milosevic, Saddam Hussein, Yasser Arafat, Jiang Zemin, Helmut Kohl, John Major, Jacques Chirac, Hosni Mubarak and Pope John Paul II.  In 1997 Princess Diana died and united the world in an outpouring of grief that has never been seen since then. On TV youth oriented shows became hits, most notably were shows like Beverly Hills 90210 (1990-2000) and Friends (1994-2004). Musically techno, hip-hop and house were in.
