Paul Lynde is a performer that's always been tucked in the back of my head somewhere. He's probably most famous for his years-long tenure as a panelist on HOLLYWOOD SQUARES, and for his recurring role as Uncle Arthur on BEWITCHED. Outside of that, he had a long career in film, television, and theatre. He routinely placed at the top of popularity polls tallied for TV stars, and was frequently recognized for his achievements by his peers.

I can watch these for hours. After a while, you start snickering the same way and it's hard to stop.

Few people know he was married to Elizabeth Taylor for 35 years.

Oh, my. It's nothing less than I thought.
Paul didn't like the show. It was a dusted off script from a failed pilot he did called HOWIE in the mid-'60s. Apparently THE PAUL LYNDE SHOW only saw the light of day because ABC used it to fulfill a contract the network had with Elizabeth Montgomery and William Asher. ABC had wanted a ninth season of BEWITCHED in 1972, but Montgomery and Asher (who were separating at the time) wanted to move on so the network gave Paul Lynde his own show to make everyone happy. The Nielsen ratings were originally good, but they tanked, and the producers canned the show.

I'm not sure Paul Lynde is a "screen icon" but... okay... I've been watching some of his PAUL LYNDE SHOW episodes (I never saw it until now) and while it's predictably irritating, it's funny how, despite the period-specific elements from half-a-century ago, it has all the frenetic clever dumbness of modern sitcoms.

It's like nothing's changed. Almost.

They probably should have done a Season 9 of BEWITCHED instead -- S9s are usually pretty good.

A scene stealer on Bewitched, I think he was on several episodes as a Doctor on the Munsters, and he was hilarious on
Hollywood Squares

Didn't know this previously I don't believe, but according to Wikipedia, Paul Lynde played Dr. Edward Dudley three episodes of THE MUNSTERS. With a quick glance at his TV filmography, it's quite astonishing just how many well-known shows he guested on during the early-to-late-'60s, among them I DREAM OF JEANNIE, F TROOP, THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES, THAT GIRL, THE PATTY DUKE SHOW, THE FLYING NUN, and others.

Well, the producers of his 1976 Halloween special found Lynde to be too grating, and therefore felt it was necessary to surround him with a variety of more "likable" guest stars in the 51-minute special of the week.
