That's a pretty easy one to answer if you are referring to daytime soaps, since there are only five currently in production!

The Young and the Restless (on CBS) is regarded as the #1 rated soap and has been for about forty years.
The Bold and the Beautiful (also CBS) is #2 in most categories.
General Hospital (on ABC) is #3, but is the longest running of the five on the air.
Beyond the Gates (on CBS) premiered roughly a month ago, and is currently tied for #3 in most ratings measures.
Days of Our Lives (streaming on Peacock) rates lowest overall, but is one of Peacock's highest rated shows.

What do you think the rankings look like when it comes to the soaps' fanbase? When there were only four soaps, B&B seemed to be the least popular soap among fans and was always last in online polls to choose the best soap of the year, but as for the other three veteran soaps, I could never say which one is number 1. It seems to be a constant battle over whether GH or Days fans are more vocal, but every now and then there's a huge roar from the Y&R fanbase, making it seem like Y&R might be on top.

As far as soap critics go, BTG seems to be the absolute number 1 right now. The worst for soap critics seems to be Y&R, because it wastes too much potential to appreciate the strong characters and actors. 4th place among critics seems to be B&B. For places 2 and 3, GH and Days alternate, depending on what is offered on which day.

I think the secret of Y&R is that, unlike the other three veteran soaps, it doesn't focus on a specific topic, like fashion on B&B or crime (and gangsters as heroes) on GH and Days. Anything can happen on Y&R, whereas the other three soaps have written themselves into a corner over the years.

Y&R, more than any other, has longtime cast members who have been with the show 40+ years, which adds to their "comfort food" feeling. Someone can tune out for a few years, then return to see so many familiar faces still in the mix. This makes it much easier to draw a lapsed viewer back in. Oh, Nikki's still fighting with Ashley. Oh, Victor is still an overbearing jerk. Oh, Sharon is still a tramp. I think that if a chunk of those veteran actors were to leave, their reign as #1 soap might be jeopardized because soap fans tend to hold on to love of characters, not necessarily love of stories, and these characters are so identified with their actors that recasting just would not be an option.
