You know, I use to laugh at those doomsday preppers but I think they're onto something. Did anyone here experience issues yesterday/today after the catastrophic failure of I.T. systems around the world beginning with a failed update at cybersecurity company CrowdStrike. Australia of course was the first country to experience issues. Are we a testing ground? Systems failed at supermarkets, banks, broadcasters and airports.

It was the blue screen of death - long thought of as dead - raising its ugly head yet again.

It was the blue screen of death - long thought of as dead - raising its ugly head yet again.

I was only minorly inconvenienced when I couldn't access my cloud storage. I know others experienced far worse.

George Carlin was always ahead of his time, and he talked about how fragile society is because it's dependent on technology.

We got a mere taste yesterday of what can happen when technology fails.

Yes, extremely frustrating day at work because our whole system is Microsoft based. Our IT department did a great job though, they had us back up just after 3:00 p.m. I don't buy that it was an update "glitch", it was a cyber attack that they'll never admit to. It was a test run on how to cripple the country.

Not just a country. It was a global thing. But I agree it is scary how dependant we've all gotten on computers and modern technology.

My sister also had trouble at work due to this computer problem. The flight booking system she uses for work didn't work so she couldn't send vouchers to customers. It was down for 4 hours before the problem was fixed so she had to work overtime.

We've always been doomed from a mortality standpoint, but this demonstrated how easily our technology-driven society can break down given the right circumstances.

Not that life has ever been without its catastrophic challenges, of course. This is just the latest example of how unpleasant life can get before we check out.

This reminds me of December 31, 1999 and all the fear about what was going to happen when the New Millennium arrived. Of course nothing came of that and I’d like to think there are plans in place to avoid another event like what happened this past week. Call me naive but I was skeptical about these kinds of things happening to our technology until the other day, even though I’ve heard about, and even noticed for myself, more and more “glitches” occurring over the last couple of years. I still don’t think we’re necessarily “doomed” though. Well, at least I’d like to think we’re not. That word has such a finality to it.

This is why it's a good idea to have some CASH at home. And some canned food, freeze dried food, toilet paper and medication to last you at least a month. Plus a radio, a container for water and a portable stove. I have not yet bought those things, but I will. Gonna buy me one of these:

I'll never go bunker prepper crazy, but there should be a little prepper inside us all so that chaos won't erupt 5 minutes after a breakdown.

We're becoming a cashless society, we have a huge digital footprint, and tech giants rule the world. They can pretty much do whatever they want if they choose to.

Data breaches are also becoming more common. I was only 16 when Y2K happened, but I didn't fear that as much as I fear how vulnerable we are now.

Here in Australia there is a movement by some pushing the slogan, "Cash is King!" Some companies had signs on their entry doors stating, "Cash only". Of course this simply failed at places like Sydney International Airport where people were sent away and had to make their own arrangements for overnight accommodation. Just imagine turning up for an international flight.

Will CrowdStrike reimburse those people inconvenienced? I doubt it.

Well of course we're all going to die some day and I've had my share of deaths in the extended family lately. We've had two last year and another two this year. Really sad.

Still until the day when we do die ourselves we have a choice of how we want to live our lives. Lately we've gotten more and more dependant on technology and computers to live our everyday lives. I think the computer problems on friday showed us that it's not a healthy way to live our lives. We need to find a better balance.

The ironic thing is you would think we’d be more secure now than ever given all this great technology we have. Why does it feel like the more tech we have the more excruciatingly painful it all is to handle? I was off from work when this all happened late last week but I basically work for an airline and I could tell you that we were unable to function for many hours.

The only thing I noticed was my modem lights were all out but the power light. But simply switching it off and back on fixed it. I don't know if that was caused by the outage or not. The first I knew about it was on the news a few hours later.

I didn’t know anything about it ‘til much later myself. I wasn’t noticing anything out of the ordinary until I started hearing about the airlines reporting their issues.
