Citizen Ashe (2021)

The life and career of Arthur Ashe. In the early part of his career he wasn't allowed to play tennis in certain states in the USA because he was black. He was also an active tennis player during my lifetime which really brings home how recent it was that racial discrimination was allowed by law in parts of the USA. It's an interesting documentary about how he was just a tennis player who refused to get involved in black activism movements but time and lived experiences caused his approach to evolve and he became one of the most high profile black activists.

Just finished all ten episodes of "Hitler's Circle of Evil" on Netflix.

Not really any new historical information, but the series focused on the relationships between the men Hitler's inner circle and some of it was quite fascinating.

A catfish story that got way out of hand. Good story, good doc.

I watched this recently and it was fascinating. I felt really sorry for Manti Te'o and how being a catfish victim cost him millions of pounds. I did have a tiny amount of sympathy for the guy (now woman) who perpetrated the catfish because he was going through a lot in his own life and his imaginary relationship with Manti gave him some comfort. These mixed feelings is what made the documentary so interesting.

All Or Nothing Arsenal (2022)

This was an amazing documentary giving a real insight into how the manager, owner and players at Arsenal football club work together. Mikel Arteta's team talks were legendary and probably the most entertaining part of the series but it was the detail in how the players are coached as individuals and as a team that I found the most fascinating.

I think the thing that pulled my heart strings the most is when Te'o said at the end that he had forgiven her for what she had done. Seemed very sincere to me and made me really admire him.

Just finished the four part documentary series LBJ: Triumph and Tragedy on Discovery with Prime. I have seen so many LBJ docs and biographical films, but this was a cut above. Historians and people who knew him and worked with him give different perspectives on how he felt about the Kennedys, how he viewed his presidency, and how he really felt about civil rights. I highly recommend this.

The Redeem Team

Watched this last. It's a nice, feel good doc for Americans, but it was shallow. Didn't give us any new information and made these guys seem like Saints (which we all know they're not). Unless you are a huge sports fan or and American looking for a reason to patriotic, I would skip it.

I'm watching Sunset Over Hollywood, a behind-the-scenes look at a retirement home in Hollywood. The documentary is from 2019 and most of the contributors have since passed away since then. One of the featured actresses is Anne Faulkner. According to IMDb, she appeared as Mrs Straub on season 10 of Knots Landing for 6 episodes. Does anyone know what plot was she involved in? I don't remember her at all. The documentary only mentions her recurring character as a factory worker in the early seasons of Roseanne and that she has stayed in touch with George Clooney ever since.

This was a beautiful and emotional doc. I'm a sucker for docs about human/animal bonds, especially felines or primates, so this one really struck a cord with me. And the young ocelot is just so frickin cute.

The SPECTOR documentary is exceptionally good. Although it starts with news of the murder, it swiftly rewinds to how Spector became a music producer and his rise within the industry, the court case is mentioned throughout but the final 3 episodes (6 episodes in total) really dig into to details regarding the murder court case .

Lots of interviews giving their experiences of the man and lots of clips from film and audio interviews with him. The court case was captured on film too, so there is lots of footage from it,

Overall a brilliant insight into a very complicated and talented man. The music, of course, is wonderful as hits from the wall of sound decorate the series with all time classics. Well worth a watch whether you're a fan of his music or into court trials/real life murder mysteries.

I’m definitely looking forward to seeing this. She’s had such an interesting life and it’s been a long and winding road for her. She made her mistakes but seems to have no regrets and is quite comfortable in her own skin. I’ve gained a lot of respect for her in recent years.

I just watched this documentary on the Hollywood censorship in the 30s and thought you would like it. The picture quality is pristine and there are a lot of movies starring well-known stars like Stanwyck, Davis or Harlow.

Very informative little doc on the history of gay porn, from it's relatively tame origins in the 50's, through the devastating impact of AIDS in the 80's, and how the internet and streaming changed everything.

Watched a docu called "McEnroe" this evening. I was gripped for the whole 2 hours. It was an intriguing insight into John growing up and his journey to becoming one of the greatest tennis players.

It featured the relationship with his father and with his various tennis opponents, some of whom he idolised and who were pivotal in his quest for winning.

He was loved by many but hated by many too. I loved watching him in the early 80s when my love of Wimbledon began and still enjoy his commentary.

He was controversial of course, but spoke openly of seeing numerous psychiatrists and of his angry outbursts. Also how his need for perfection and self criticism started at an early age.

Becoming a father himself was a turning point where he realised what the relationship with his own father lacked.
Not sure when it was made, but looked fairly recent. Enjoyed every single minute of it.
