This is one of those films that came out during an era when I was &quot;into&quot; slasher films. This means it&#039;s been spoilt by being heavily-viewed at the time and every beat - almost every line - being burnt into my brain. But on the plus side it does mean I view it affectionately. In fact, watching last night felt comfortably familiar despite it being quite a number of years since I last watched.

The predetermined death premise, the unseen force killing people off one-by-one and the creative deaths have always made this film feel to me like an early-Noughties take on The Omen, and on that level it&#039;s fine. Naturally, the cast is younger and prettier, and there&#039;s an injection of teen speak and terrible pop music which serve to make it feel more lowbrow and popcorn-ish, but since this is intended to be a fun popcorn movie that&#039;s all fine.

I think it still holds up as a decent example of the era. Many of the performances are decent enough and the plot is just clever enough to satisfy without (as Randy Meeks would have it) losing the core demographic. There are some memorably suspenseful moments and some decent shocks.

The film&#039;s greatest asset for me this time round was Shirley Walker&#039;s score which added some real atmosphere and sounded wonderful. It&#039;s way overdue an expanded 2 disc release on CD (and since the same year&#039;s Hollow Man has just got exactly that, I have some hope it could still happen).</blockquote>
