Dallas To Get Remastered In HD

Great shot of stage 1 on West Olive!

Glad WB is honoring the legacy of "Dallas" although, historically, it's questionable that they are selling "inherited" third-party products to today's audience as part of their own studio history.
Okay, I'm turning a blind eye on Lorimar's products since Lorimar has a close connection to WB — Lorimar was mainly stationed on the WB / TBS lot in its early days, and they produced a number of shows on the WB / TBS backlot and its soundstages, such as "The Waltons", "Falcon Crest" and "Flamingo Road", just to name the most famous examples; also, Lorimar was fully absorbed into WB after the 1989 merger.

But what's really ridiculous is that one of the "WB 100" promo trailers I recently saw clearly included clips from MGM movies. I do know that WB purchased the rights to the pre-1986 MGM film library in one of MGM's many declarations of bankruptcy (at the same time when Lorimar bought MGM Studios), but presenting MGM movies as part of WB's studio history is an awkward understanding of Hollywood history. Or have such promos been created by negligent and unknowledgeable employees?

Warner Bros distributes MGM movies and series internationally, but this was taken over by Amazon. How does all this complicated gear work?

Amazon only got the rights to the MGM catalog from 1986 onwards and the United Artists library as this became part of the MGM company during the merger in the early 80s (1981 I believe).

Yes, that's correct. The different bankruptcies and other "clearance" sales of the various MGM eras all resulted in different companies obtaining ownership and distribution rights of original MGM products, ranging from period to period.

So was there any official word of a proper bluray-release yet?
I know they offer Bluray-on-demand with part of their classic back-catalog for quite a while now, but that are just burned blank blurays that everyone can do at home as well and it's very questionable how long they last, because of the much tighter data-structure than blank DVDs, the blank blurays are even more likely to fail in a few years, so i'd never buy such a set, as that is a ticking time bomb that you can never be sure of of how long it lasts.
So i hope they announce a proper pressed bluray release soon, because otherwise .. i don't really believe in such a set anymore.

I'm more and more worried that we don't have a physical release of these HD versions... it's dragging way too long.... hope I'm wrong otherwise I'm going to go sit and go on a hunger strike in front of Warner Bros.

Nah, i'm long over those things. I always supported such releases and am a day-one-buyer.
But if the networks won't come up with a proper release, i don't have any problems with downloading the HD episodes from "shady" pages and store them on one of my SSDs. I was done with longterm waiting and hoping long ago, my time on this planet is limited, as are my nerves. They have the chance to properly release it and i'll open my purse for that. If they won't, i will look into other possibilities that are out there without having a problem or feeling any bad about it. I came to terms with myself with these things long ago, because i've paid for the actual content several times already in the past.

I'm with you Matthew. If Warner's are prepared to release Dallas on Blu-Ray in a timely matter then I'm happy to reward them with my hard earned cash...and it's already sitting there just waiting to depart my wallet. That said, if someone like Amazon is prepared to upload Dallas in HD to their Australian site I'll watch as I already have a subscription with them. Right now it's only available on their Freevee service which is currently locked into the American market. Yes I'm aware of VPN services but I'd prefer to save money rather than chase my all-time favourite series around the world wide web.

I'm a patient person generally but if Warner's are still dragging their feet in 12 months I might just reconsider my options.

I think a lot of people share your opinion considering Knots Landing and Falcon Crest are not entirely released on DVD but the shows are clearly still being watched.

Why would a transfer to another TV norm alter the titles? That's nonsense.
Well that's not exactly what I meant.
It's not that transferring from PAL to NTSC would alter the titles. It's that the prints that were used domestically in the US are not necessarily the same as the ones used in other regions.
I believe this may have more to do with there being original network versions of the episodes and then, later, versions for syndication which I gather sometimes have edits, different pre-show previews etc.
For example, the prints used for original broadcast here in Australia on season 6 used a different arrangement of the theme music than the versions on the DVD releases and indeed on later repeats on Australia's Foxtel pay tv channel. The only logical reason for this discrepancy is that there are variant prints, for whatever reason.
As another example, the prints used for the Foxtel run of season 8 used a different centre image of Donna Reed on the title sequence than the versions which were originally broadcast, which match the ones released on DVD (I think there is one episode on the DVDs which uses the variant image).
Again, obviously this points to variant prints being available.

I don't remember the Susan Howard credit ever looking as big as it does on the DVD prints, so ... it makes me wonder whether they are different from the prints broadcast here originally. (In fact it's not that Susan's credit looks bigger than I remember - all the OTHER actor's credits look SMALLER).

But as you say, my memory is fading ....

Promo art for the remastered Dallas
This is not a criticism at you Garry because I really appreciate how you have kept us in the loop on the Dallas restoration but I would have preferred if the person responsible for creating the art work had kept the words Dallas in their yellow/golden hue with the black shadow. But this is just a minor thing.

With JR Ewing on show at Warner Bros Burbank Studio and now this artwork it appears things are beginning to ramp up for our favourite series.

I own the Dallas DVD series up to Swan Song (Bobby's death) and whenever I do a rewatch I get annoyed how much of the episode story is given away in the preview prior to episode starting. I find I have to keep the remote in hand to skip forward. My question is. Did this occur back in the day when Dallas was aired here in Australia? I don't recall it was.

We never got those previews in the original UK terrestrial showing of Dallas on BBC1. The show always started with the opening credits. I never knew about them still I started buying the DVD boxsets. :)

In Spain strange things happened with many episodes too. During the first seasons aired locally (OG 3 to 5), most previews were dubbed into the respective language (Catalan eg) but the background music was muted. I didn´t find it out until the dvds came out. Other times that music was different, which didn´t make sense either. Some of the episodes (especially the final 3 of OG Season 6 much to my despair) had a cringy (and I mean cringy) soundtrack, which of course dvds hadn´t.

About the Donna Reed center images, we had two, but they weren´t alternated, the one with the close shot remained in the second half of the season. We never had episode recaps until the within-the-episode one in "Swan Song". Of course we did have them when Telepìctures entered the scene and opened every episode with one, starting with the OG Season 10 premiere.

Something that I may have missed in this thread is the comments on the disproportionate image of the stars in OG Season 9, with Sue Ellen (or Jack!) looking almost ridiculously defoooormed in her left image (see it below). Has anyone mentioned this here? Did Warner correct that (don´t think so!)?

Madame la Reed in her longest opening image here in Spain.

PS: I don´t know if have mentioned this before, but does anyone else hears Larry´s laughter in his credit for OG Season 12? I know I´m not imagining things because it´s NOT audible any more in the one for Season 13.
