How should it have ended?

But then it cuts to a shot of the outside of Southfork exploding
And as the audience witnesses one final wide shot of Southfork....

Southfork.jpg
...the camera pans to a mysterious figure standing on Hogge Drive. We don't see who it is of course as night has descended. Then in a shocking finale Southfork blows up as the mysterious figure, silhouetted against the events unfolding in front of them lovingly gazes upon their creation and destruction.

Both Amanda Ewings show up -- yes, both of them, completely unaware of each other -- with Uzis and mow everybody down, screaming about "thieves and whores!" and "how dare you leave me in that asylum....?!?" A kind of BBQ massacre, if you will, filmed half-heartedly on the fake patio set inside the studio.

But not before the Two Amandas have their ways with Bobby, still convinced he's "Young Jock." And they're still too codependent to hold him accountable and not melt at his touch. Bobby just looks uncomfortable.

There may, indeed, be multiple, other Amandas. We're just not sure, really.

One of the Amandas had a bad perm before escaping the sanatorium, which may have played a role in the incident:

I think Dallas has the right idea about how to end the show, it was just executed very poorly.

JR did indeed need to confront who he was and the damage done to others, but not through some stupid "what if I had never been born" fantasy. Instead, I would have liked to have seen him be shown the people in his life and the damage he has done to them.

Have him see Bobby and Christopher talking about how JR's schemes ruined the family and Ewing Oil.

Have him overhear John Ross and Sue Ellen talking about what a horrible father and husband he was, how they both despise him and never want to see him again.

Have him hear Miss Ellie talking to Ray about how disappointed she is in JR and how Ray was always a better son to her and how she will never step foot on Southfork again so long as JR is there.

Then, have him sitting alone in the SF living room when a dark shadow with a gun shoots him dead. We don't get to see who the culprit is, so Dallas ends with the eternal question "Who Shot JR?"

a triumphant Guzzler returns from Venezuela and marries Garnet McGee on the Southfork driveway. Bobby and Pam are best man and maid of honor. Miss Ellie is enchanted, Sue Ellen is amused, Jock is baffled, and Lucy sneaks away to the hayloft with a returning Cousin Jimmy Monahan, played by a third actor.

Disgusted, JR and Ray skip the ceremony, renew their friendship, and are last seen in a seedy Waco motel with a pair of blonde sisters played by Audrey and Judy Landers. (this is before the arrival of Mitch, so no Afton)

Digger and Cliff get drunk and decide to (literally) crash the wedding in Cousin Jimmy’s red Mustang. Digger can’t keep the car straight, though, and ends up missing everyone and driving into the pool. Everyone laughs except Jock, who snarls “Dammit!” and smacks a newspaper he was holding for some reason. Freeze frame, credits roll.

I've just had a brilliant "What if?" idea. Imagine the last episode where JR finally succeeds at securing Ewing Oil all to himself. As he stands alone in the Southfork living room he raises a glass to Jock, celebrating his accomplishment. We then witness a blurred image of someone standing at the entrance of the living room.

JR: "I did it Daddy. You once said real power is something you take. I have Ewing Oil!"

Miss Ellie: "Was it worth it JR?"

From this point we could have a special one hour commercial free episode with just JR and Miss Ellie having a slanging match.

To witness Larry and special guest star Barbara Bel Geddes having a final showdown would have had this viewer salivating.

The same Ewing Oil that saved SF, and its continued prosperity enabled a life of privilege and wealth for a hypocritical matriarch,
who shamelessly tried to give SF away to an absentee brother and then gave half of it to an outsider/interloper, thus depriving her sons of its inheritance if she
predeceased her second husband?

Granted Ewing Oil had some bumps (some rather major ones) and JR made some questionable decisions,
but the legacy of Jock Ewing deserved more respect.

You would have ended the show that early?
if I’m going to shoehorn the Guzzler and Garnet into the finale I figured it would have to be pretty early on so at least a few viewers would remember them. Fans left wanting more would be rewarded with a near-immediate reboot - a non-Cidre one since she hadn't established herself in the industry at this point.

(As a showrunner I think I’d have been about as successful as a Willie Gust crime spree!)

So, in some worlds, all the men are just fine -- and only that bitch Miss Ellie was the problem.

There's no question that Ellie had her issues (too) but it's astounding to assert she was Madame Destructor to a bunch of decent, hard-workin' guys.

Some feel that Jock loved Ellie more than she did him... Odd, because I never saw Jock as all that loving, and she seemed to fall apart when he died... But there are those who claim that: "Men are in love, and women are in business."

But I don't know 'bout all that.

I wouldn't have changed much in the final episodes, but I would have kept JR and Cliff as partners at Ewing Oil as the final business solution and omitted the Weststar possibility (and thus Dusty's cameo). JR's encounter with Adam should have taken place in his office at Ewing Oil, and Cliff should have stormed into the office when JR was about to shoot himself. Cliff, who once wanted to kill himself, would have been able to stop JR from committing suicide, and the two would have had a kumbaya moment in which they decided to run Ewing Oil together, just as their fathers once could have. So Dallas would have had a happy ending, but would that really be better than the ending we know?

To save confusion a number of posts have been deleted from this thread and a couple minor edits have been made as the discussion has strayed some way from the topic of "How 'Dallas' should have ended".

Please remember we have a few terms which cover posting etiquette and some which apply to this thread are below as a reminder:

Always respect the views of other participants even if they don’t agree with you. It’s okay to disagree with other members, in fact we encourage debate, just keep the dialogue positive. Always focus on the logic of the argument rather than the individuals involved in the argument. Simply put, treat others as you would be treated; respect them and their views, even if you disagree with them.

Don’t be a “troll”. Trolls intentionally incite annoyance or offense. They do not participate constructively in the discussion and do not add any value to the debate. Don’t bully, harass or threaten other participants.

If you wish to accuse someone of committing a crime or being an idiot, this is not the place to do it.

We encourage members to take advantage of the "ignore" feature when/if a member writes things that consistently irritate or bother you.

At this point, we don't need to go into who said or started what or what someone's motive was. We are also keen that any disagreements here don't infect other threads. Let's just move on and continue the discussion in the spirit intended when it was started.

I think Dallas should have ended with a great family diner and peace over the family. After all that battles and war and hate, a great reconciliation, like in Falcon Crest, with a reminded of all the missing characters...

Sorry to disagree, but that would have been anti-Dallas and corny. Just watch the Dream Season to see it. The show was always about dysfunctionality, not about happy endings and we´re-all-friends-now, see Dynasty for that kind of ending. Only Knots did it right, and somehow it sounded fake, as in a sitcom kind of way. But it´s only my opinion...
