[QUOTE="darling of dallas, post: 380418, member: 58057"] On behalf of the millions of romantics who fell in love with Dallas when it was a soap opera - before it became a drama about a supervillain - I say Bobby and Pam definitely belong together. The year was 1978. I was 7 years old and watching television. A gorgeous young couple, driving down a Texas highway in a little red Mercedes convertible, appeared on the screen. They pulled up at a gas station. They were talking. He loving caressed her hair. They kissed. I had not seen how they met. I had not seen them on a single date. I had not seen a wedding. Somehow, I knew that I was looking at two people who were deeply in love. Bobby and Pam had imprinted on me. I would faithfully watch Dallas for the next 9 years because of this amazing couple. Early on, I loved the episodes that positioned Bobby and Pamela's good marriage back-to-back with JR and Sue Ellen's bad marriage. I would have a silly smile of satisfaction on my face, watching Bobby and Pam work through their problems and reaffirm their love for each other. (I still do.) Their marriage was the stuff dreams are made of. It was not perfect. They are not perfect people. To quote Patrick Duffy, when I saw Bobby and Pam, I always thought "That's love." It is often suggested that Bobby and Pam had a less interesting marriage because it was not plagued with cheating, scandal and violent confrontations. However, Bobby and Pam were not ordinary people, and they did not have ordinary marital problems, which made them very interesting to so many of us. Bobby and Pam were the beautiful, sexy couple on Dallas. Yet, they were good people with morals, and they were firmly committed to being faithful to each other. Hardly common behavior for attractive people in a soap. Pam never got even with JR. She certainly could have, just once, lured JR into a compromising position for angry Bobby to find. It would have been easy. JR did not even try to hide his lust for her! And, what better way would this have been to get back at her mean, jealous sister-in-law. As far as Bobby goes, in season 7, even Pam tells Sue Ellen she has no idea why Bobby never cheated on her. Those of us who adore this couple are most proud that they never cheated! Bobby and Pam's biggest marital challenges involved the Barnes/Ewing feuds. Yes, Bobby had an old girlfriend who never seemed to go away, and Pam frequently battled demons over her fertility struggles. They were strong enough to overcome these obstacles. It was the family feuding that destroyed their marriage. Bobby was always fighting his brother for their father's approval. He neglected his wife in the process. Meanwhile, Pam was often blindly devoted to her brother because he was the only constant family she had. Their fathers hated each other. Their brothers hated each other even more. These brothers did more damage to Bobby and Pam's marriage than anyone, including Katherine. Katherine was entertainment for viewers who wanted a villain to create mayhem in Bobby and Pam's relationship. She was also a disposable character (like Kristin), as the audience would be extremely angry with whoever was responsible for breaking up our golden couple. Cliff had knowledge of Katherine's desire for Bobby. He could have told Pamela what Katherine was up to at any point. He did not because he was selfish. He did not because he always wanted revenge on the Ewings. He did not because he was feuding with JR. The never-ending fight between their families, with them caught in the middle, was the real problem in Pam and Bobby's marriage. The Shakespearean tale of the bitter fight between the Montagues and the Capulets is what doomed this couple's marriage. There is nothing ordinary about that. For many of us, Bobby and Pam's divorce was a very sad moment on Dallas. We did not want to see Bobby and Pam get divorced! Patrick Duffy and Victoria Principal are simply perfection as Bobby and Pam. Neither of them could be replaced. I thank both of them for providing THE most beautiful moments of television of my childhood, my tween and teen years. I thank them for bringing me joy - even now as I rediscover this great show.
