Yes, as I've said before, despite "Moon River" and the forlorn pre-dawn opening, and those period shots of the Manhattan brownstones, BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S is a lousy movie, one which tries to be "mod" in a this-is-what-the-'60s-are-going-to-about kind of way, and the picture is indeed hard to sit through. Taylor rightly resented the way MGM forced her to do BUTTERFIELD 8, but it's spectacular trash -- it's what trash should be, quite frankly. It has fabulously plump Elizabeth falling for slimy john Laurence Harvey who admits to his upper-crust and unusually-sympathetic wife, Dina Merrill, that he may be in love with his favorite hooker. All it needs is its own theme song, like a "Jack the Knife" by Bobby Darin or something. And every time she screams, "I loved it!" about her molestation at 13, I howl --- a howl exceeded only by her car crash death (SPOILER ALERT!!) at the end of the movie, one of the funniest doomed damsel moments ever captured, as she shrieks in mortal terror and her vehicle drops vertically out of the sky as if it fell from Mars. So, yeah, Team Gloria for me.
