I'm sure Katzman hated his work. Katzman told Curtis Harrington to his face (on another set) that he hated Harrington's work. Vincent McEveety didn't last long on DALLAS, nor Alex Singer and neither did Larry Ellkann. All really good directors, like Corey Allen... And that's what Katzman disliked. Uncle Lenny wanted no artistry on DALLAS, no moving cameras, no atmospheric lighting, etc. (And, of course, he hated Bradford May's brilliantly moody cinematography from Season 7). Katzman seemed to find all those things to be "pretentious." And while the first half of DALLAS got along well enough with them, the series failed to grow creatively in its second half. And it could have benefitted from Katzman's stranglehold loosening up as it went along, but that never happened, the series just getting sillier and over-lit as it gradually wound down. Yes, we saw some attempts at physical artistry and experimentation during Season 9, but Katzman was briefly gone that year (he was named as a consultant but had no power). New producer Peter Dunne, fresh from the spinoff, ran Season 9, and though it started out with promise, it became obvious that Dunne's writing team quickly lost any sense of how to tell a story, and so the new visual style did come off as pretentious and was quickly eliminated by Katzman when he returned with Patrick Duffy for Season 10. But nothing Dunne did during Season 9 was any worse than what Katzman later permitted for Season 12 thru 14. I think it was Howard Lakin (decent at scripts, mediocre at overall multi-episode structure) who said that Katzman simply told the individual episodic directors how to direct their episodes. (But it might have been somebody else who said that... Preece, perhaps?)
