I was actually okay with the concept of Sue Ellen's movie, had it been better executed. They should have had her option the film rights to Valene's "Capricorn Crude" (if anybody on DALLAS had actually remembered that). It's been suggested that Sue Ellen should have mobilized a kidnapping plot to whisk John Ross away from JR by Spring of 1989. Which seems inspired and gutsy. But the same person who recommended that also pointed out that the entire point of the DALLAS narrative seemed to be that everything that happened could also be undone. Think about it. It's true. That pattern repeats itself endlessly throughout DALLAS. And not just the shootings and the plane crashes. Perhaps that's why Season 10 (per DVD count) is almost the epicenter of DALLAS, and represents everything DALLAS was all about: you had the deaths of the patriarch and the favorite son reversed back-to-back, both done in Shakespearean style, a la Hamlet and a la a dream. Now, is that kind of repetition and constant un-doing of previous deaths and disasters really necessary in order for DALLAS to be DALLAS? Probably yes, and probably no... Some of them worked beautifully, while some of them were tired, abject failures. The show's creative growth was stultified in the last half of its run, so it's harder to justify those repetitious undoings as the program wore on than it is those from the earlier period of the series... Earlier on, this pattern of repetition and undoing felt frankly Biblical, as if the Ewings were imprisoned in their own karmic vortex from which they couldn't escape, a "great big morality play" as Susan Howard once described it... Later on, however, it just felt like lazy writing.
