I agree with a lot what’s being said here but I’ll just add that I felt J.R. and Sue Ellen both made mistakes as parents. J.R. could be insensitive and use his own family as pawns in his games but Sue Ellen was always making the mistake of going back for more. I’ve always felt her biggest mistake was remarrying him once she was already out and on her own. She was just too gullible and weak compared to J.R. and that was always his way back in her life. It wasn’t until years later that she finally learned how to deal with him and realized how stupid she had been, as she even said in her final season. I wish we could’ve had more of that Sue Ellen around earlier on in the show to deal with him. The stronger version was so much more fun to watch for me and I loved how she’d needle him and be a thorn in his side when he needed it. As for John Ross, well, kids having to observe battling parents saying insensitive things is nothing new. It’s all par for the course when it comes to upbringing. Certainly it played a part in shaping him and his personality flaws we saw later on but that’s life. Neither of his parents were even close to perfect but they obviously loved him and did the best they could given the circumstances of being rich, dysfunctional people.
