Jenna had an important job: If you believe that Dallas parallels a Shakespearean tragedy, then there will always be something to bring Pam and Bobby together and there will always be something to keep them apart. Jenna was supposed to be another reason to keep them apart. It was a good theory: Looking back in time, Jock Ewing lived near Lucas Wade. They were both in the oil business. Jock had a son, Bobby. Lucas had a daughter, Jenna. Ever since those two were kids, people figured they would grow up and get married. Jenna coming back should have been a compelling reason that Pam and Bobby would be kept apart. But when the writers tried to bring Jenna back it was just too clunky. instead of things developing naturally, we were treated to different characters taking turns announcing "We always knew Bobby would end up with Jenna." It was weird.
