THE COLBYS bombastic theme is one of the best TV tunes ever written.
While Conti's music for the 1980 pilot for DYNASTY was melancholy and sailing, and the series' theme initially compelling, the orchestration of DYNASTY's theme resoundingly echoed that series' slide -- with the instrumentation from the later years becoming so draggy and strained that it began to sound, as one poster described it years ago, like the shriek of a cat being skinned alive. (Or, y'know, Krystle upset about something, post-head injuries).
I think the opening title visuals for THE COLBYS were much too similar to the parent series -- the font, the overall style, that oil well fanfare design thingy. But then, the show
was entitled "DYNASTY II" temporarily, something that was removed on the request of Heston, as was rumored.
Conti's FALCON CREST' theme was also perfect, although some years' version were better than others (I rather like the orchestrations for S1 and S8). Although the visuals for that went downhill after S4, when the new video editing technique from Lorimar introduced a tackiness to it all.
I think Bill Conti holds the second place record for Emmy awards for music, topped only by Bruce Broughton, or at least he did for a while.
But, yes, THE COLBYS tune was sublimerishesque.
