Well, it can make a difference. The fake Southfork patio didn't work as well as the real thing in Texas (except at night). Even my Mama once observed (and she wasn't usually all that quotable) that when a movie can't get the locational vibe right "they usually can't get anything else right either." Especially if they actually went there and still can't get that locational vibe right. (Like DYNASTY'S sole trip to Denver to film at the Carousel Ball, all the shooting done briefly on the sidewalk and mostly inside a convention center. So it felt like nothing). Larry himself said in 1989 that the location filming in Vienna and Moscow (where DYNASTY should have filmed --- as if, Mr. Spelling!) "didn't really work." And then Lorimar had used up its budget in order to film in Texas that summer, and so they didn't. So, no, it doesn't always help, particularly if the plot is muddled. Also, it's really hard to compare DYNASTY to anything else, or any other show. Its pathologies creatively just set it apart, such that rational comparisons simply cannot be made... Even their ad line was: "It's not drama, it's DYNASTY!" Well, then, what else is it?? It really was just like that. Good casting, to be sure. But their motives quickly slid into: "Alexis is still angry about the divorce", "Blake is still angry Alexis won't leave him alone", and "Krystle is sad and nice, but the writers won't care about her after Alexis settles in and finds her place within the series". On DALLAS, you always understood the psychological motives of the characters. Those motives, especially for the principles, were consistent because we knew their individual neuroses -- except for Pam, whose reactions were more unpredictable. On DYNASTY, certainly Season 4 thru Season 7, all we knew was that someone was mad or horny. And all the "why don't you share your pain with me??"/"Does your male ego prevent you from sharing your pain with me??"/"I'm your father-mother-daughter-son!" dialogue, usually in the middle of an attack by a Colorado bear, doesn't pass muster as nuanced layering.
