FOX were pulling in a younger audience, that ten years earlier, would not have watched as much television because there wasn’t as much programming being aimed at them. Now there was a network that was being programmed to specifically appeal to them, hence the success of 90210 and Melrose. I suppose there’s a few things to consider here. The majority of the soaps launched in the 90’s did not look like any of the soaps from the 80’s. Wealth and family sagas were out, and soaps about groups of teens or twentysomethings were in. So if you were an 80’s soap fan looking for something akin to Dallas or Dynasty, you weren’t very well served by the 90’s roster of shows. Of the roughly 30 soaps launched during the 90’s, only 5 of them were in a similar vein to the 80’s soaps in terms of focusing on families. The Monroes and Four Corners were probably the closest in DNA to the 80’s soaps but both of those shows suffered from bad timeslots and networks unwilling to stick with them. There was also the trio of soaps that CBS tried in the old Knots timeslot during the 1993-94 season. Angel Falls seemed to be an attempt at a rural Knots with a 90’s twist, while the other two - Second Chances and Hotel Malibu - were kind of Knots-lite. So I think the shift towards youth focused soaps, a wider variety of viewing options being available through the growth of FOX, WB, UPN, cable and satellite and a seeming lack of interest from networks to replicate the 80’s shows meant that the 80’s viewers just went elsewhere.
