Dex was an integral part of the story when first introduced, bedding the head of Colbyco and having a seat at the Denver Carrington board. Marchetta introduced the GI Dex element (I don't know if that was because of trying to integrate Daniel Reece into the canvas, who was his GI partner). But to be fair, she also planned on expanding the Dexters, which Spelling nixed because he didn't want more actor salaries--that is also how Billy Dee Williams was dropped.
Michael in the original and Culhane here are peripheral characters. I think a better planned show, aka not on CW, would have had Monica get pregnant by Culhane; that way he was tied to the Colbys and always caught between Monica and Fallon. Instead, we get to have a plot for Grant Shaw's wife to play.
