Julia was such a complex character, who really came into her own for the third season.

There is something regal about Julia, those high cheekbones, the icy cool stare and the cut glass tone of voice, she seems to step right out of the
1945-1967 era of the 20th century.

The eldest Channing daughter was ever dutiful in the first two seasons but what a complete flip of character, after ‘CLIMAX’. Crazy is an understatement but Abby shone and yeah season 3 really was her year.
Julia is having a glass of red wine, in the kitchen of the Gioberti castle mansion. There is a party happening and she is in the company of Gus, (a scene from season 1, 1981-’82):
Julia takes another taste of the wine.
Gus: “What do you think?”
Julia: “It’s interesting! I’m surprised. I had no idea that Uncle Jason had a private wine reserve.”
Gus: “He did make that much.”
Julia: “Hmm. It’s a shame.”
Julia then looks at the red wine bottle and says, “Tell me about this label. It looks so primitive.”
Gus: “He designed it himself. I think he was trying to say something.”
Julia laughs while replying, “He certainly didn’t want any part of Falcon Crest, did he?”
She continues: “I guess no one was as close to him than you.”
Gus: “He’d only let me get so close. Then he would stare as if he never seen me. I think he knew he was going to die. I still don’t understand how it really happened?”
Julia: “He was drunk. He drove his truck, off a cliff.”
Gus: “So everyone says!”
Julia looks into Gus’ face and replies, “so everyone says!” She then walks off, into the living room.

Actually, is it so crazy?
Even watching season one she's sort of lurking in the background she's sort of insane. A quiet one, but still insane. She's like a parallel of Emma who just decided to go insane.

It was rather unfortunate how underrated Julia became in 1986. Then there was her exit, for someone who had been in so much of the action.

If I had an unlimited budget then I'd just keep Julia in the background.

Julia was initially so classy and always following Angela's protocol but behind all this she was frustrated. Her desire to get away from Falcon Crest never materialized, at least not the way she would have wanted i.e. to be with Tony. All in all a very interesting character.

To me Kim Novak's character was like a replacement for Julia, intentional or not.
