Treadwell was Abby's not-well-behaved employee. Like Scott Easton and Ted Melcher before him, he went a little overboard when trying to do her bidding. The plan to take over the Sumner Group had to have a three-pronged approach because TSG was being co-run by Paige, Claudia, and Mack/Karen in equal parts. He (well, they) went after Claudia and Kate with a van to run over them, which was rather direct in comparison to their plot to separate Mack and Karen from their 1/3 of the company. Mary (actually Loretta, dead Mary's sister) initially wanted to run a con to make Greg pay her hush money. When that failed, she told Val some lies, hoping they would end up in Val's book about Greg. Instead, Val figured out she was a con woman and went to Florida to dig up her real background. Since Treadwell/Abby had decided to use Mary and her brother Joe in their plot to take over TSG, Treadwell made them take Val prisoner once Val had discovered their true plans and connections to a larger plot against the Sumner Group. Val came back at the end knowing exactly who had ordered her taken prisoner (Treadwell) but I tend to think that Abby knew what had happened as well, because Treadwell showed no signs of sentimentality--he would have just had her murdered. I believe Abby ordered them not to kill Val, to just hold her until Abby had succeeded in taking over TSG. Whatever the case, Mary then was shoved into the lives of Mack and Karen, proxy owners of 1/3 of the Sumner Group. We saw that Mary really had no great affection for "her granddaughter" Meg--she was suing for visitation just to cause strife in the MacKenzie household and (hopefully) make them do something illegal to get her away from their daughter (which Mack did). With enough pressure, they would sign over their 1/3 to Paige, which would make it easier to assume control. Treadwell later sent Nick that gun with the onus on him to kill Greg, Paige, and Claudia--but of course Nick couldn't follow through, so a bomb was planted on Greg and Paige's plane, while Claudia and Kate went into hiding/protection thanks to Greg. It all unraveled with (thankfully) Treadwell dead instead. The sudden heightening of stakes (murders, threats of murders, bombs, etc.) is blamed on Treadwell, of course, because even though he's working for Abby, he has the goods on her checkered past in Japan so he feels empowered to do as he pleases. I assume he stood to get a big financial windfall from the takeover, but I don't recall their saying just how much. I do recall her having this eye-rolling attitude of having to put up with a flunky who has no finesse, no "style" in his plotting--just going around trying to kill people to get what he wants. His blackmail material on Abby ended up in Nick and Anne's hands. Nick sold the info back to Abby, but Anne sold the same info to Greg--basically a double pay-off with a big kiss-off to both of them as they left town rich.
