I don't own any of the characters in this story and no copyright infringement is intended. This fic is an alternate timeline where the dream season wasn't a dream. It picks up after the last episode of season 9. *** Life Is But a Dream Part 30: *** "What do you think they're talking about in there?" Sue Ellen shrugged at her sister-in-law and put down her glass of iced tea. "I have no idea, Donna. And honestly, I'm not sure I want to know." "It's strange they have Lucy and Pam in there but told us to stay out," Jenna groused. "I'm sure it involves Cliff Barnes," Ellie spoke up. "That explains Pam. But not Lucy," Jenna said. "There's more going on than we know," Ellie informed her. "Whatever they're doing, we have to trust it's for all of our good. Better not to ask questions. They'll tell us when they're ready." *** "Pam?" Pam glanced up at Lucy and gave her a weak smile. "I'm alright. " The men had gone into the study and closed the door, asking Lucy and Pam to wait for them in the living room. "I know this is a lot to deal with; especially with me dropping that bomb about Afton." "Honestly, I'm shocked Afton has a baby. But not surprised at all she would keep it a secret from Cliff." "Do you think knowing will be enough to persuade Cliff to tell us what he knows?' "I have no idea, Lucy," Pam sighed. "It depends on whether or not he even cares. Cliff will always do whatever he wants and whatever he sees as in his best interest." "Yeah,' Lucy agreed. "You know, he's a lot more like JR than he would ever want to admit." Pam shifted uncomfortably in her chair and shook her head. "Not really. JR is a bastard and a cutthroat. But he…" "What?" "As much hurt and damage as he has caused over the years, I don't think he ever deliberately hurt the people he loves. I mean, he's hurt them all plenty. Especially Sue Ellen, but I don't think he ever meant to. He always thought he could scheme his way out of trouble. Cliff though...he claimed to love Jamie and Afton, but he was happy to destroy both relationships to get what he wanted. And I know loves me. But time and time again he has done things he knew would damage both me and Christopher." "Pam…" Whatever Lucy had been going to say was lost when the men came out of the study and filed into the living room. "Alright," JR informed them, "Pam, you're going to the hospital with me and Ray to talk to Cliff. I'll need you to do most of the talking. Understand?" "Yes," Pam said miserably. "I'm the one who has to tell him about Afton and use it as leverage to make him talk." "Yeah," JR nodded. "I'll just go let Donna know I'm leaving for a bit," Ray said, heading towards the kitchen. "I want to talk to you alone for a minute," JR nodded at Lucy. "I'll meet you in the driveway," Pam said, standing up. JR waited until Pam was out of the room, then leveled his gaze on his niece's face. "You know what you've done?" "Yes," Lucy said softly, her bottom lip trembling. "Your marriage is most likely over." "My marriage has been over for a while," she confessed in a small voice. JR moved forward, put his hands on her shoulders, and carefully searched her eyes. "You belong here on Southfork with your family. Talk to Sue Ellen. She'll help you arrange someone to pack and ship your things." "Okay." JR gently brushed a tear from her face and bent his head to place a soft kiss on her forehead. "I'll never forget what you did for Sue Ellen. I'll never forget what it cost you." "Just don't hurt her again, JR. Don't let this be for nothing. " "I won't," JR promised solemnly. "I swear it." "Ready to go, JR?" Ray's voice came from behind them. "Yes." JR kissed the top of Lucy's head then strode towards the front door. "Let's get this over with." *** April settled her mother comfortably in her bed, stood up straight, and took a deep steadying breath. She turned around and narrowed her eyes on her little sister's face. "I can't believe you let him in here," she seethed. "Not like I had a lot of choice," Michelle shrugged. "He tracked you down. April felt her body relax and she shook her head in defeat. "Alright, Jack," she smiled a small smile, "alright." *** Sue Ellen laid her hairbrush down on the vanity and sighed. JR had been gone for quite a while now. He had told her he was going to the hospital to see Cliff but hadn't told her why. And she didn't ask him. Something was wrong. She didn't know what...but… Her feelings…. Her love for and devotion to JR had been so clear to her. She had felt both deep inside her. But now...with every passing day...she was more and more unsure of how she really felt. She wished she could remember! If she could just recall how things had been between them before she was kidnapped… But she couldn't. She had tried so hard. But she still couldn't remember. And then there was Jerry Kenderson. But there was no answer; only the same uneasy feelings. She felt like she was losing her mind. And she didn't know how much longer she could go on this way. *** Pam sat back in her chair and waited. She'd told Cliff she knew he was neck deep into trouble. She'd told him that she suspected he was involved with whoever had kidnapped and hurt Sue Ellen. She'd told him about Afton and his daughter. He seemed to be stunned into silence. "Cliff?" she whispered after several minutes. "Say something." Cliff turned his head away to stare at the way, refusing to look at her, much less to speak. JR finally had enough and snapped. "Enough, Barnes," he growled. "You can feel sorry for yourself on your own time. Start talking. Now." "JR…" Pam protested weakly. "What do you want to know, JR?" "I don't know anyone named BB Calhoun," Cliff said in a flat voice. "Then who was it, Ciff? Please tell us," Pam pleaded. "It was Kenderson," Cliff finally confessed. "Jerry Kenderson is responsible for everything that's happened." *** Calhoun sat back against the tree and settled himself in for a long wait. He had no idea when the Ewing family would decide to gather around the family swimming pool again, but he was confident it wouldn't be long. He glanced over at his scoped rifle and smiled. He hoped he could get JR and Sue Ellen together, but he would be satisfied with Sue Ellen alone. After all, she was his primary target. He could take care of JR later at his leisure. But Mrs. Ewing had to go. And the moment she appeared pool side, he was going to put a bullet right between her eyes. Sue Ellen didn't know it yet, but the amount of time she had left to live could be measured in minutes. ***
