I did watch it, and it´s one of my favorite shows of the 2010s. I still listen to its soundtrack very often and follow the careers of the young talents in it. I have read that the second season isn´t appreciated by some (not me), including the season one actors who were axed. To my surprise, Anjelica Houston recently revealed that she didn´t like filming this at all. She is just amazing as the no-nonsense producer who is always at odds with her ex-husband.

The two young leads were a discovery to me, especially Megan Hilty. She is great here and everything else I have seen her in. I had no idea of who Katharine McPhee was because I don´t watch talent shows, but she manages to be convincing in her role despite her (or Hilty´s) nul resemblance with Marilyn. But this isn´t a Marilyn biopic as you said, but the making off of a musical based on her. Funnily enough, both "Smash" and "Bombshell" eventually became real stage musicals.

The casting is phenomenal, including the smallest roles. The soundtrack is memorable and catchy. Debra Messing knows she is playing a lifetime role that is above "Will and Grace". And what´s more, it´s so soapy and addictive, with no guilt attached. I would recommend it to anyone who loves music and movies! (Don´t expect "Glee" 2.0 despite the appearances!)

I remember before the premiere, everyone thought Glee vs. Smash would be like Dallas vs. Dynasty, but as soon as Smash started, it became clear it was more like Dallas vs. Flamingo Road. Of course, NBC wanted a piece of the musical pie, but Glee was in its third season and still incredibly creative when Smash premiered. Compared to Glee, Smash seemed boring, at least for the important 18-49 demos and the even more interesting 18-34 demos. Perhaps Smash would have had a better chance of winning over viewers if it had premiered a year or two later, when Glee was winding down.

Personally, I don't remember Smash as being terribly entertaining. Nevertheless, it's a show I'd rewatch, at least the first few episodes, because I'm not entirely sure if I don't remember Smash as strongly simply because of the direct competition from Glee at the time, or because it actually wasn't that exciting.

There was also drama behind the scenes- the creator/executive producer Theresa Rebeck clashed with the producers/writers, to the point she was fired by the time of the 2nd season.

Yes I know, though I loved both seasons. So the two producing teams must have done something good...

It was probably more interesting in being about the production of a Broadway show than involving as far as the characters were concerned. Possibly best remembered now for a recurring role by Thorsten Kaye just before joining The Bold & The Beautiful.
