Studio executives think audiences want a "happy ending" -- and even audiences themselves think they do, until they get one, say "Ahhhwww, that's so sweet...!" and then never think about the movie again. The films everyone remembers have sad or at least ambivalent endings, I remember the Susan Sarandon/James Spader film from 1990, WHITE PALACE, and I thought it was an interesting, weird little picture I kinda liked --- until the final scene where's he's driven across the country and takes her atop a greasy tabletop where she's working in a crowded NYC diner... Ruined the movie... Turns out that the studio demanded the scene be added to make the thing "more commercial" (which didn't work). That happens all the time. I want Phantom Season 10 to end with Krystle, escaped from the asylum, hovering with Alexis over Dennis Grimes' body on the floor of the ballroom after Alexis accidentally shoots him. Fade to black. No music. If there has to be that 1991 REUNION, Krystle & Blake can have their little dance, but only because we know Caress is lying dead upstairs from a bullet wound delivered by, perhaps, Eva Braun.
